Wow! Xiaomi have just come out with a new cool rideable - the Xiaomi M365 folding electric scooter. We are guessing that M365 stands for 365 days - indicating that the scooter will become your trusted companion throughout the year, taking you anywhere you need to be right past the gridlock. Sounds sweet, doesn't it?
The scooter comes with a nice set of smart features and sports a sleek eye-catching design. But is it what you are looking for? Let's find out.
1. Do local authorities allow riding a scooter on city streets?
The laws regarding electric scooters vary from country to country and even state to state. And in most places, the regulations on using the new rideable are quite vague. For instance, scooters are not allowed in the state of New York but are perfectly fine in California.
Before finalizing your purchase decision, check local regulations on the Internet or get in touch with the traffic department to make sure you will be allowed to ride the scooter once you've bought it.
2. Do you have to ride long distance?
The longest distance for one full charge of the M365 electric scooter is 5 hours. This makes it the perfect choice for short-distance travel - but you definitely won't be able to use it in the same way as a car or a motorcycle.
So, if you plan to use the scooter for a quick commute to work (and your office is not far from home) or a ride around the neighborhood - go for it. A longer distance ride, however, will leave you feeling tired before you even step into the office or leave your road companion completely out of juice.
3. How fast will you be going?
The Xiaomi M365 scooter's speed range is 5 km/h to 25 km/h and the optimal speed for energy saving is 18km/h. Here, you need to consider the traffic speed limitation in your country or state. For example, in China, the driving speed in the city is under 30 km/h, which makes the scooter okay. But in the USA, the driving speed on a city road is between 15 miles/h to 35 miles/h, about 24 km/h to 56 km/h - which makes the Xiaomi M356 scooter's speed way too slow for road use.
Consult your country's traffic speed laws and make sure the electric scooter is usable on the road. Sure, you can always just ride it on the sidewalk - but this will significantly slow down your travel time (and definitely annoy the pedestrians).
4. Which floor do you live/work on? Is there an elevator?
The Xiaomi M365 scooter is made of aluminum alloy, though it's foldable and looks tiny, it's far from light, weighing a total of 12.5kg. Carrying it upstairs and downstairs on a regular basis can prove to be a Hulk-worthy mission, especially on those hot summer days.
5. We don't mean to pry - but how much do you weigh?
Due to the aluminum alloy body, the Xiaomi M365 scooter can carry a maximum weight of 100kg.
Once the weight is over 100kg, the footboard may bend and the tires may blow out.
6. Scooting on rough terrain or steep slopes?
The Xiaomi M365 scooter's pedal ground clearance is 87.5mm, and the wheels are small. This makes it unsuitable for rough terrain and steep hills as the underpan may get damaged. Even if you think it's worth the risk, your riding experience won't be good but shaky and unstable.
This scooter requires a flat road. Consider the road conditions you have in mind for your scooter rides and make sure they are a good fit.
7. Love getting caught in the rain?
Then the Xiaomi M365 is not for you. The scooter's pedal ground clearance is low making it impossible for it to wade into 2 cm of water. Worse even, it's an electric scooter without any anti-water protection - so, using it on a rainy day could prove quite dangerous.
Think of this post as a handy checklist before purchasing the Xiaomi M365 electric scooter. We are not here to dissuade from buying this undoubtedly cool travel device - but do consider its limitations before placing the order. You probably wouldn't want to part with a hefty some for a gadget that will only use once or twice, right?
