Xiaomi has recently introduced its new Xiaomi Mi A3 , two phones that largely highlight the fact of being part of the label Android One.
Yes, but, Android One, what is it? Through its evolution and a cleverly orchestrated communication, the label nourished many fantasies and misconceptions during its existence. It is time to restore the truth.
Android One is a label created by Google. Originally, it was launched while the company sought to conquer the Indian market with a version of Android lightened and devoid of any modification. That's why, even today, this label is often mistaken for Android Go.
Today, it describes a much broader philosophy: the fact that Google certifies that the device bearing it follows the quality standards and experience desired by the creator of Android. In other words, it has the latest security updates, is protected by Google Play Protect and is not modified by the manufacturer.
The main interest of this range is not only to offer the stock experience but also to allow much faster deployment of the latest versions of Android. It is even possible for the majority of them to benefit from the beta programs with the announcement of a new major version.
And for good reason: the updates of these phones are often supervised by Google, which helps the manufacturer to deploy them as quickly as possible. Warning: Google is no longer fully responsible for updates to Android One devices, this was the case for the first generation of devices. It just makes life easier for builders development teams now.
Android One and the Pixel range of Google are very similar in their philosophy, namely to highlight especially the services offered by Google.
That being the case, any manufacturer can integrate the Android One label, and the hardware design, as well as the software optimization of their products, come back to them in full. Pixels are naturally built entirely by Google.
The difference is especially at the software level: if the two are similar, Google began - especially with the Pixel 2 - to really offer its own interface above Android, which puts forward especially Google Assistant. This is particularly noticeable on Pixel Launcher, the exclusive application launcher for Pixels. This is not the case for Android One devices, which remain relatively neutral.
We will focus on this list only on devices available in France.
Still, very close to the stock experience, Motorola chose the Android One label for a device.
Nokia has adopted the Android One label for all of its products and intends to follow this direction for its future phones.
Xiaomi has adopted the Android One label on just one of its ranges for now: the A range.
For now, HTC has only produced a single lineup dedicated to Android One, and has only hosted two devices.
