Can a solid-state hard drive be added to a new laptop?

Many people already know the benefits of installing a solid-state drive, not only starting up dozens of seconds faster, but also reflecting the overall performance improvement by leaps and bounds: in the past, you had to wait for a computer, and after installing a solid-state drive, it finally became a computer waiting for you to input. However, for brand notebooks, only high-end models with high prices are standard with solid-state drives, and they are generally configured with low-performance, small-capacity versions. So can you buy a low-end version with only a mechanical hard drive and install the solid-state drive yourself?

Most notebooks in the past had built-in optical drives, as long as the optical drive bit was modified and a hard disk bracket was installed to achieve the goal of adding solid-state drives:

And now you will find that notebook manufacturers have unanimously chosen no built-in optical drive planning at a glance at the new notebook configuration list. This not only saves manufacturing costs, but also makes laptops look slimmer-it's just hard for users, making it much harder to install solid-state drives. Let me show you how to guess from the configuration list whether a laptop can upgrade its own DIY solid state drive.

High equipped with SSD+HDD program, generally can buy low configuration back to their own DIY to install the appropriate M.2 SSD.

Take the HP Shadow Elf II generation as an example, its configuration table can be found in the product libraries of major IT media, in which the high-end hard drive description clearly shows the conversion from M.2 SSD+7200 to HDD, while the low configuration only has 7200 rpm mechanical hard drives. Generally speaking, the same series will share the same mold, since it is highly equipped with the location where SSD is installed, then the low configuration can be installed on its own, and the capacity choice is more free.

Neither of the HP Shadow Elf II models listed above has a built-in optical drive, so it is impossible to install a solid-state drive by modifying the optical drive bit, but it confirms the existence of the M.2 slot. The part in the red circle below is the high-end version of the M.2 2280 solid-state drive. The low-equipped position is blank, we can install it by ourselves.

The original high-end 128GB solid-state drive costs more than 400. in fact, we can buy a ToshibaQ200EX 240g M.2 solid-state drive for less than 600. it is fully compatible and faster than the models used in the original high-end products.

, For example, Lenovo Xiaoxin 700e-sports version, the low configuration is 5400 rpm mechanical hard disk, the high configuration is SSD+5400 to mechanical hard disk. Although the interface type of SSD is not specified in the product library information, there is no doubt that the M.2 interface is the platform of the sixth-generation Core processor.

The first and fourth columns above are both i5 processors. High-equipped solid-state drives are more expensive than low-equipped ones. If you replace them with ToshibaQ200EX 240g M.2 solid-state drives, not only the capacity will be doubled, but also the performance will be much higher than the original OEM model. The following picture is the disassembly diagram of Lenovo Xiaoxin 700. the M.2 SSD slot is located in the lower left corner of the picture:

The 16192 X marked in the following figure is the M.2 solid state drive slot. Although the low-end model does not have a standard solid state drive, the slot is still there. You can install your own M.2 2280 solid state drive, such as ToshibaQ200EX 240G M.2.

All departments do not have a built-in optical drive, high-end also only a single SSD option: generally can not strengthen the hard disk

Some notebooks due to positioning restrictions, there is no built-in optical drive, and there is no internal M.2 slot, such as Lenovo Y50p. Its characteristic is that the high-end model only has a single solid-state disk, and there is no SSD+HDD option. The high-end solid-state disk obviously directly occupies the SATA hard disk bit of the original mechanical hard disk.

For models such as Lenovo Y50p, it is not feasible to install SSDs, because there is no second hard disk bit reserved inside the fuselage, so in fact, it is feasible to buy SSDs with 2.5-inch SATA interface, such as ToshibaQ300 or A100, to directly replace the original mechanical hard drives. In fact, it is also the same route as the high-end models. The removed mechanical hard disk can be installed in the USB3.0 mobile hard drive box and can be used externally when needed.
