How to clean a keurig machine

Over time and with regular use, it is perfectly normal for traces or residues of scale to settle in the brewing system of your coffee maker. It is simply caused by the minerals normally found in water. Although scale is non-toxic and safe, it can affect the optimal functioning of your coffee maker if you do not clean it occasionally.

Performed every 3 to 6 months, this simple process will not only help extend the life of your device, but will also allow it to produce maximum performance. You will always enjoy all the aromas and flavours of your favourite Keurig coffee!

The right tools for the right job

Before you start cleaning your Keurig coffee maker, you will need a large cup (do not use cardboard glass), fresh water and a sink nearby. You will also need to purchase a 400 ml bottle of Keurig descaling solution.

Cleaning in 3 easy steps

Once you have everything you need, you will see that maintaining your coffee maker is very easy: it will only take you 45 minutes. Here's how to do it.

Step 1: rinse with the descaling solution

First, switch off your Keurig coffee maker by pressing the power button. Then empty the water tank and remove the water filter (if you have one). Pour the entire contents of the Keurig descaling solution bottle into the tank. Finally, fill the same bottle with tap water and pour it into the tank to dilute the solution already present.

Then place your large cup on the coffee maker tray, where you usually place it when making coffee, and activate a 296 ml infusion by lifting and lowering the handle without putting a K-Cup capsule in it. Of course, although everything your coffee maker brews is usually delicious, this time throw the contents of the cup in the sink!

Step 2 : the cleaning infusion is repeated

To make the most of the power of the descaling solution, brew 296 ml infusions in your large cup until your coffee maker, regardless of the model, tells you to refill the water tank to continue working. Now let the coffee maker run for 30 minutes. You can use this time to reorganize your coffee corner or listen to an episode of your favorite series.

Step 3: rinse with cold water

After 30 minutes, discard any solution that may remain in the tank and rinse it well with fresh water. Then fill the tank to its full capacity, without exceeding the maximum indicator.

Put your large cup back in place and make an infusion by choosing the largest size available on your coffee maker. Don't waste K-Cup Keurig capsules, you can use them once the cleaning is finished! Throw the contents of your cup in the sink.

Repeat infusions a dozen times, throwing the contents of the cup in the sink each time. It is very likely that you will have to refill the water tank during the process.

Do you see any moss

If foam starts to leak from the coffee maker, you should know that this is perfectly normal. It is simply a common reaction between the cleaning solution and scale. This occurs especially when the coffee maker is heavily descaled, which prevents the descaling solution from filling it properly. In this case, it is also possible that the coffee maker will only produce a thin stream of liquid, or even nothing at all, and you will hear air coming out.

If this happens, turn off and unplug your coffee maker, then drain and rinse thoroughly all descaling solution that may remain in the water tank.

Reconnect your coffee maker, turn it on again and repeat step 3. If the problem is still not solved, disconnect the coffee maker, let it rest for 30 minutes and resume rinsing with water.

Speaking of foam, when your coffee maker is clean, don't forget that you can always add a perfect and smooth foam to your coffees with the Keurig milk frother!

Perfect infusions

Once you have cleaned your Keurig coffee maker, it will run at full capacity and you will be sure to get perfect brews at the touch of a button every time!

To prevent mineral deposits in the water you use in your device from affecting its performance, remember to do this cleaning every 3 to 6 months.

If you want the water you use to be as pure as possible, we also recommend that you use the Keurig water filter starter kit in your coffee maker's tank. This set can help to slow down the accumulation of tartar. If your coffee maker is already equipped with a water filter, you can also purchase the 2-pack water filter cartridges. It is important to change them every two months to optimize their effectiveness.

We know that spring cleaning can seem challenging. At least when your Keurig coffee maker is running at full capacity, a good cup of coffee can better help you get to work! Start your big cleaning by purchasing the Keurig descaling solution here.
