A goblin with IT experience can probably be ruled out. The problem is mostly that the input sensitivity of the notebook touchpad is too sensitive. Many laptops have a special driver (e.g. "Synaptics TouchPad") that can be used to adjust this sensitivity in order to avoid the problem. This application is often found in the system tray (bottom right).
.If such a driver does not exist, the touchpad is integrated into the system as a normal PS/2 mouse.
.In this case, a right click on the "My Computer" icon and then the "Properties" option in the context menu will help.
.This will open the System Properties dialog box. Click on the "Hardware" tab and then on the "Device Manager" button.
.In the "Device Manager" window there is the entry "Mouse and other pointing devices", which reveals the touchpad as a PS/2 compatible mouse after a double click.
.A right click on this entry takes you to the properties of the touchpad and then to the "Sampling rate" option under "Advanced settings". Here you reduce the degree of sensitivity of the touchpad.
