The Always On Display (AOD) is a very popular feature of smartphones, as it will not only allow you to have a glance access to the time, calendar, notifications and more information without unlocking your phone, but will make your device truly cool and unique. The new MIUI 11 brought more customization options for the Ambient Display feature. Now, we are going to tell you how to enable Always On Display on any Xiaomi phones, including Pocophone F1, Redmi Note 7 Pro, Redmi K20 (Xiaomi Mi 9T), Xiaomi Mi 8, etc.

Always On Display

Not all Xiaomi phones support AOD feature. Specifically speaking, the phones with AMOLED screen can work with AOD feature, while the phones with LCD screen don't support AOD feature. Want to know whether your Xiaomi phones support Always On Display features? Just keep reading the contents below.

How to know if your phone's screen is AMOLED or LCD?

Before turning on the AOD feature on your Xiaomi phone, you should note that the native Always On Display feature is only available far some certain Xiaomi phones with AMOLED screen. To know which kind of screen type your phone belongs to, there are 3 ways you can use.

Method 1. Check the phone's display information on Gearbest

To know which kind of screen type your phone belongs to, you can check the detailed product information on Gearbest. To do this, you just need to search your phone's name on Gearbest, and check the phone's display information. For example, I search the Xiaomi Mi Note 10 on Gearbest, and its display information shows that the Xiaomi Mi Note 10 adopts an AMOLED screen, so it supports AOD feature.

Method 2. Check phone's screen type via supported devices list

Also, you can check my previous article about the list of Xiaomi phones that work or doesn't work with MIUI 11's Always On Display feature, in which only part of Xiaomi phone devices are covered. You can head to the page to check if your phones are on the list.

Method 3. Check phone's screen type via AMOLED test image

If you still cannot find the screen type of your Xiaomi phones, you can also download an AMOLED test image to judge the screen type. Just follow the steps below:

Step 1. Download an AMOLED test image. This image is all black.

Step 2. Open the AMOLED test image in a full-screen image viewer with the status bar and navigation bar hidden.

Step 3. Turn your phone's brightness to the max level.

Step 4. Take your phone into a dark room to see if you can see any light from your phone.

Step 5. If your phone's screen is still totally dark when displaying the test image, it indicates that your phone adopt an AMOLED screen, as all-black image displayed on an AMOLED screen shouldn't emit any light at all.

Step 6. However, if your phone's screen emits light when displaying the all-black test image in a  dark room, you have got an LCD screen. As the LCD screen can always emit light as long as your phone turns on. That's why the AOD feature on the LCD screen will cause fast battery draining.

Use Always On Display feature via third-party apps

If your phone doesn't have Always On Display feature, you can also mimic one via downloading some third-party apps. The popular apps include:

● Always on AMOLED

Always on AMOLED

● Custom AOD

Custom AOD

● Glance Plus

       Glance Plus

One thing to note is that these apps will may negatively affect battery life more than the native solutions, especially on the phone with LCD display. So, if your phone adopts an LCD screen, you can use this method to experience the fun of the AOD feature once in a while. However, we don't recommend you to always use this feature, as it will seriously shorten your phone's battery life.
