How to Install and Configure a GPS Tracker (1): Troubleshooting

Setting up a locator ( TK102-2 or any other model) by GPRS can be a complicated task, since often if it does not work we have no easy way of knowing what part of the assembly is missing

- Locator: With a TK102B there is not much information provided directly by the locator when it is in use. When you put the battery or connect it to the power externally, the LED will start to flash quickly, and after a few seconds, it will start to flash slowly. Once the blinking is slower, we know that our locator is already registered in the GSM network.

- SIM: Leaving aside the different types of SIM and telephone network types, and assuming that the GPS tracker we have is correct to work in our country, we can find problems with answering machines, call forwarding, cloned SIMs (same shared number for two SIMs), prepaid cards that have run out of credit, cards that do not have active internet access, etc. We must deactivate all the extras that may give us problems, and it is always a good idea to configure the SIM that we will use with the tracker first from a mobile.

For obvious reasons, when we call or send SMS to our tracker we should not do it with a hidden number, since then the tracker has no way of knowing to which number to respond.

It is convenient to investigate a little which telephone company suits us according to how we are going to use the locator. By SMS? It is interesting to have a good SMS rate between the Sim of the tracker and the phone from which we are going to call you regularly. By GPRS? We must see what traffic in Mb we are going to use monthly before hiring a flat rate, since usually for a few Mb the paco per Mb will be cheaper.

- Sending data by GPRS:

This is where problems usually start since we have no easy way to know if our tracker is sending data correctly. The best way to know if we have correctly configured our tracker for sending data (APN, a user and APN password) is using the SIM in a smartphone where we can manually configure the internet connection. The APN, username and password with which we can navigate on a smartphone should also work in the tracker. If by configuring APN, username, and password, we are unable to connect to the internet with that SIM, we will not be able to do so either in the locator. 

- Receiving data: The most problematic step. Using a third party website like GPS-trace configure, why doesn't our unit display correctly? Not sending data? Are you sending them, but the web does not receive them? The web receives them, but does not recognize them as ours or does not interpret them?

If we work with the GPS-trace website, your server may not be receiving our data, or may not interpret it correctly (we have not configured the correct IMEI in our account, we have not chosen the type of tracker we have, etc.) We can use the test website to see if our data is arriving and to also see which tracker model we have to use in our configuration. If we are not even able to visualize data from our tracker at, we can use our computer to verify whether or not data is received. For this, we first need to configure our tracker to send data to our public IP (we can easily know it at and port that we choose and redirect on our internet connection that port to the IP of our computer.

On our computer, we can use the GPS_Receiver.exe program to see what traffic we are receiving from our locator.

Or we can use some other traffic analysis program to see exactly what information reaches our computer through one of the ports. I personally have a preference for Wireshark, although anyone serves.

- Data analysis: If we have come here, we have the difficult thing already done. Our locator sends data, we are receiving them correctly, we need to know what we want to do with them.

If we are using the GPS-trace website with a free account, it is normal for us to be an end-user with a single locator. We can configure email alerts in our account when a series of events occur (that a certain speed limit is exceeded, when the locator stops sending data for a certain period of time, to be notified if the locator approaches or moves more than a certain distance) distance from a point, or when the tracker enters or leaves a geo-fence, etc).

The geofences are ideal as anti-theft of a vehicle. They allow us to configure an area through which we usually move and be notified if our tracker leaves the area.
