How to take your DJI Mavic Mini by plane?

The DJI Mavic Mini is the perfect drone to take with you to easily create holiday memories. If you want to travel with and especially transport it by plane, there are a few rules to follow.

How to take your DJI Mavic Mini by plane

Keep your drone close by

We do not recommend that you place your DJI Mavic Mini in the hold when you fly. Hold baggage may not be handled with care by airport staff. There is also a very small risk of loss by companies.

Instead, we recommend that you bring your DJI Mavic Mini, its batteries and accessories with you in your carry-on baggage (or carry-on baggage). This way, it will remain close to you at all times. You can equip yourself with a backpack or a specialized pouch to hold your drone.

Check the quantity of Lithium

The most important rule to be observed is the total amount of lithium transported. As you probably know, lithium batteries can be extremely dangerous and can cause serious damage (fires, pressure problems, etc.).

Most airlines allow a maximum of 100Wh of hand luggage.

The calculation of the lithium amount is expressed in watt-hours (Wh) and can be easily calculated if you do not have this information. Take the power of your battery expressed in ampere-hours (Ah) and multiply it by the battery voltage (V). This gives: Wh = Ah x V.

Battery power is often expressed in milli-ampere-hours (mAh). To obtain a number in Ah, multiply your mAh value by 1000.

Concerning the battery of the DJI Mavic Mini, it contains 17.28 Wh so you could potentially carry five of them without any problems. However, some airlines limit transport to a number of batteries transported (regardless of the quantity of Wh).

Prepare your batteries for transport by plane

We recommend that you follow these few steps to ensure optimal protection of your batteries in the event of an incident:

● Isolate the connection of your battery with insulating tape (Chatterton type)

● Store your batteries in a fireproof bag (LiPo bag type) which, in the event of a fire, will isolate them from the outside to reduce damage

Learn about your airline's rules

In general, we recommend that you contact your airline upstream to ask them about their rules for transporting this type of aircraft. Since the practice of the drone has become more and more democratic in recent years, all companies have taken the step of setting up a framework on this point.

Some companies will accept more or less batteries by limiting a maximum number when others take into consideration the 100Wh limit.

In any case, allow time to declare your devices at a ticket office on departure to avoid any disappointment once on the flight. Beware of domestic flights, airlines are often more restrictive.

Laws in force in the country of destination

Finally, check the law in force in the country you plan to visit before going there. Some countries formally prohibit the practice.
