This is the second part of our two-part guide. We continue to look at the meaning behind modern headphone certifications logos.

LDAC: Sony's Response to Apt-X

LDAC is a result of Sony's R&D into high-quality technology. The main purpose is to solve sound quality problems after the Bluetooth data compression.

Unlike with apt-X, users can freely select

◆ Sound quality priority (990kbps)

◆ Standard (660kbps)

◆ Connection priority (330kbps)

Under optimal conditions, LDAC data transmission quantity is 3 times that of existing SBC or AAC technology.

LDAC is superior to apt-X, but apt-X benefits from earlier uptake. LDAC is propriertary Sony's technology so it is uncertain whether other manufacturers will adopt this standard.

DOLBY: Dolby surround sound

The most mainstream sound standard in the world, the Dolby surround sound in headphones is distinct from the one for speakers – the former can simulate the equivalent of 5.1 speaker playback.

Dolby surround sound

Despite being based on 2-channel stereo, Dolby Headphone utilizes non-standard surround sound technology so the listener feels the sound coming from multiple directions.

Dolby technology used extensively in gaming headphones because they generally feature built-in Dolby 7.1.

DTS: DTS surround sound

A competing standard to Dolby, DTS occupies significant market share when it comes to surround sound.

In fact, DTS and Dolby are both "lossy" digital compression technologies. This is called "perceptual" data compression technology is based on human psychoacoustics with the listening characteristics, so whether it is objective or subjective, there is no significant good or bad points.

DTS technology

In response to the impact of Dolby panoramic sound, DTS therefore announced a new generation of technology called DTS: X.

This was applied to a new generation of audio technology headphones, named DTS headphone: X for an authentic surround sound experience.

SRS: 3D stereo technology

The final certification logo we will cover is from the USA-based SRS labs. Based on the human auditory system dynamics, psychoacoustics principles, and patent sound technology research, this technology is also used in the headphones.

SRS: 3D stereo technology

Both SRS virtual surround sound and Dolby surround sound (mentioned earlier) are well-known, however SRS technology predates its Dolby equivalent.

SRS is the most important component of its personal computer research, and is a cornerstone of the SRS Audio Sandbox ultimate audio enhancement software.

In order to allow headphones to also reproduce true 5.1 surround sound, SRS Headphone 360 technology was developed to support multi-channel audio sources.
