VoLTE (Voice Over LTE): everything you may want to know about it

ByTown Kassis 2019-09-03 1085

For 7 years now, LTE mobile communications technology has enabled turbo-fast Internet on the move. Language, however, is still predominantly handled via the old 3G or 2G. The so-called "Voice-over-IP over LTE", VoLTE for short, promises enormous improvements for consumers and providers alike. Despite this, LTE is still mainly used for data transmission. But the new technology is slowly gaining momentum. In this article, you will find out what is VoLTE, why not all smartphones support VoLTE, what are the advantages of it, and much more.

VoLTE calls on the phone

What is VoLTE?

Most mobile phone customers who pick up a smartphone still inevitably end up in "ancient" mobile phone standards such as GSM or UMTS when making a phone call. These work purely on a wired basis and still transmit voice on physical or virtual channels. With VoLTE, on the other hand, voice transmission is handled completely digitally in the LTE network. This takes the form of data packets based on the IP protocol.

This has considerable advantages, as we will show below. Unfortunately, implementation proved to be relatively difficult for mobile operators for a long time. We will explain later in this special why this is the case. First, let's take a closer look at the many plus points.

What are the advantages of VoLTE?

Voice over LTE could revolutionize mobile telephony in the future and have a lasting positive impact, similar to what LTE has already achieved with the mobile Internet. After all, 4G allows you to surf at 100, 150 or even 500 MBit/s on the go. VoLTE opens up a whole range of advantages - for end customers and mobile phone providers!

VoLTE offers higher voice quality

The most interesting aspect is the improved voice quality compared to 3G or OTT VOIP, e.g. Skype. VoLTE offers "HD telephony", so that speech sounds even more natural and clearer. Modern AMR-WB codecs [Adaptive Multirate Wideband] with 12.65 or 23.85 Kbit/s are used. In addition, mobile operators prioritize the data IP packets via QoS for the lowest possible latencies and highest reliability. Video telephony via VoLTE should also finally become an experience.

VoLTE reduces power consumption

Not only the ears benefit from the new technology. The smartphone battery also lasts much longer. In comparison to telephone calls via common VOIP services, the energy requirement decreases by approx. 40 percent with otherwise the same quality![1] But also compared to 3G- or 2G-based telephone calls, the energy requirement is considerably reduced. However, this effect is largely dependent on the efficiency of the chipset installed in the device.

Enormously accelerated connection setup

If you are not used to making calls with VoLTE, you will probably be amazed at the extremely fast call setup at the beginning. Up to now you could refill your cup of coffee until the other person rang the bell. With VoLTE this process takes between 1 and 2 seconds! Choose, click, speak!

How do I know if my phone already have VoLTE?

In principle, it is extremely easy to recognize whether you are already using VoLTE or not. If not active, first establish the mobile data connection. Now the LTE or 4G symbol should appear in the status bar of the smartphone.

If this is not replaced by 3G or 2G or UMTS or H+ during a phone call, VoLTE is active. Otherwise, the phone changes to one of the predecessor standards. Sometimes Voice over LTE must be activated separately in the terminal device. For Android devices, you will find the setting under "Settings" -> "Mobile networks". If the device is compatible or has received the firmware update from the provider, you will find the item "VoLTE calls" ("Use 4G LTE data for HD calls") or similar.

Frequently asked questions about the VoLTE

1. Are VoLTE calls free?

Yes, the providers offer the service for free to all customers who have an LTE-enabled tariff and suitable smartphones.

2. Does VoLTE calls work with data switched off?

Yes, the VoLTE calls don’t require data connection, so you can make VoLTE calls without turning on your phone’s data.

3. Does VoLTE calls consume extra data?

No, the VoLTE calls will not consume extra data.

4. Does all phones support VoLTE?

No, not every smartphone supports VoLTE function. To check if your phone supports VoLTE, you can go to “settings” - “Mobile networks” to find if there is a VoLTE option.

5. Will the VoLTE work under the 2G or 3G network?

No, the VoLTE function only works under the 4G network environment. If there is no 4G network, you can turn off the VoLTE function on your phone and then you can use the traditional way to make phone calls.
