Friends who have studied physics know that the technical formula of electric power is: P=UI, where P is for power, P for voltage, I for current. If you want to increase power, voltage and current are the decisive factors. So there are two main categories of fast charging technology: high-voltage low-current and low-voltage high-current.
Fast charging classification
Fast charging representative high voltage and low current: Qualcomm Quick Charge and Mediates Pump Express.
Fast charging representatives of low voltage and high current: OPPO VOOC, OnePlus DASH and Huawei SuperCharge.
However, Apple does not have its own fast charging technology. The iPhone 8 and above adopts a relatively generic USB PD 3.0 standard.
The USB PD standard, also known as the USB Power Delivery standard, requires the implementation of USB type-C interface. The major feature of the new USB PD 3.0 standard is the introduction of a protocol called PPS (Programmable Power Supply). PPS protocol will also include current mainstream standards such as Qualcomm QC4.0/3.0, Mediatek PE3.0/2.0, Huawei /OPPO, etc., to realize the standardization of current quick charging schemes.
It is worth mentioning that although USB PD 3.0 is down-compatible with USB PD 2.0 or lower, iPhone 8 / 8 plus and iPhone x have to use the USB PD 3.0 standard to achieve fast charging. Therefore, it is essential for the 29W USB-C charger to be equipped with a USB-C to lightning cable.
Qualcomm quick charge adopts high voltage fast charging standard. Thanks to their dominance on the processors, most of the mainstream Android phones now use Qualcomm quick charge.
Now Qualcomm's latest fast charging technology is quick charge 4.0, which is often referred to as QC 4.0. Compared with the QC 3.0 quick charging, the charging power is increased to 28 W. at the same time, the USB PD 3.0 standard is introduced in terms of compatibility.
The fast charging scheme used in Pump Express and Pump Express 2.0 is similar to that of Qualcomm quick charge, which belongs to the "high voltage and low current" type fast charging, in which PE 2.0 fast charging can provide a charging voltage of up to 20V.
However, in PE 3.0 / 4.0, the low voltage scheme is used, and the output voltage is dynamically adjusted from 3V to 6V. In fact, since the beginning of Pump Express 3.0, the development direction will be closer to the USB PD standard.
About the OPPO VOOC fast charging, I am sure that you have heard the slogan “Charge it for five minutes and talk for two hours”.
The Oppo Vooc fast charging technology adopts the scheme of "low voltage and high current", the output specification of the charger is up to 5V 4A. In order to realize the control of large current, the charging data line and battery of VOOC need to be customized, and the fast charge and charger of VOOC should be realized. Charging data lines and mobile phones are also used together.
Oppo also introduced the SuperVOOC superflash technology on the Lamborghini version of Oppo Find X, which charges for up to 50 W and officially charges a phone in 35 minutes.
In fact, OnePlus DASH’s fast charging is Oppo's VOOC charge, the two chargers are interchangeable, but the input ports on the phone aren't the same. If your Type-C data line is USB 3.0 / 3.1, plus the original charger, you can also activate the dash charge for one plus three devices.
Huawei initially used the technology similar to Qualcomm QC 2.0 and PE fast charging technology of Mediatek. Its output specification is 9V 2A, which belongs to "high voltage and small current" fast charging. After 2016, VOOC and DASH are used as "low voltage and high current" fast charging technology, and the charging output voltage supports the dynamic adjustment of 3.5V to 5V.
These are some of the common fast charging technologies that we have at present. Although each brand has a clear classification at present, it has gradually been incorporated into the USB PD 3.0 compatibility from now on and from the point of view of the future development. After the unification of USB PD fast charging specification, we hope that one charger can realize fast charging function for different equipment without any restriction of custom equipment.
