Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 provides accessibility / assistive functions for people with disabilities. These limitations may be related to vision, movement or age and can become obstacles to standard phone use. With that said, some of these features may come in handy even if you are not suffering from any disabilities. Let's explore.
How to find assistive functions on Xiaomi Redmi Note 4? |
To enable assistive functions on the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4, go to Settings - Additional settings - Accessibility.
TalkBack is an Accessibility Service developed by Google that helps vision-impaired users interact with their phones efficiently. It uses spoken word, vibration and other audible feedback to assist users in navigating the phone screen.
Talkback is actually an original feature of the Android operating system. I found it pre-installed on my Xiaomi Redmi Note 4, but if you see a "No services installed" notification, you can download the app from Google Play Store.
If you choose "Use pitch changes", your phone will speak keyboard feedback in a lower-pitched voice; if not, your phone will not change voice pitch when speaking.
If you choose "Use proximity sensor", the proximity sensor will silence speech; if not, the proximity sensor will not control speech. You could find much more settings as below.
Switch Access enables users to interact with their Android devices using switches instead of the touch screen. The feature is especially helpful for those with dexterity impairments.
To use switch access, you will first need a device to convert switch input to keystrokes. Several companies sell these devices: Enabling Devices, AbleNet, RJ Cooper Tecla, and others. You can use a USB cable or Bluetooth to connect it to your Android phone. Once connected, pressing the switch will have the same effect as typing on your phone...
You can turn on the captions for your device and choose options (language, text, and style) for closed captioning.
When captions are on, you can adjust the following settings under Settings - Accessibility - Captions.
Language: Select the language in which you want captions to appear.
Text size: Select the size for your caption text.
Caption style: Select the style and color for your caption text and background.
Your caption settings might not apply to certain applications.
You can zoom or magnify to see your Android device's screen better.
Zoom in (this feature makes everything on your screen bigger)
Triple-tap anywhere on the screen, except the keyboard or navigation bar.
You can pan or adjust the zoom level easily.
● To pan across the screen, drag two or more fingers.
● To adjust the zoom level, spread your fingers apart or pinch together.
● To zoom out, triple-tap the screen.
You can see the differences in the pictures below:
Temporarily magnify the screen
Triple-tap and hold anywhere on the screen, except the keyboard or navigation bar.
● To move the magnified area, drag your finger across the screen.
● To stop magnifying, lift your finger.
Notes about magnification gestures
Do the triple-tap quickly and continuously.
If you open any app when zoomed in, you will automatically zoom out. Triple-tap to zoom-in again.
High contrast makes the text easier to read on your device. Depending on the original text color, this functiondefines the text color as either black or white.
It might not work correctly everywhere on your device because it's still an experimental feature.
When this setting is enabled, you can simply press your device's power button to end a call. Now you can hang up the phone call faster and easier.
This setting controls TalkBack spoken feedback as you type passwords.
● Enabled: Your phone will speak out password characters like any other typed characters.
● Disabled: You can only hear the password characters via headset.
To protect your privacy, this setting is disabled by default.
The Accessibility shortcut allows you to enable TalkBack quickly, without the use of sight.
You can enable or disable Accessibility shortcut easily.
● Step 1. Press and hold the power button until you hear a sound or feel a vibration.
● Step 2. Touch and hold two fingers until you hear the audio confirmation.
This feature can be useful if there are several people using the same phone. You can enable accessibility temporarily through the shortcut on the lock screen until the device is unlocked.
The following settings are available:
Preferred engine: The default text-to-speech engine choices will be different on different devices. Google's Text-to-speech engine is just one of the common options, you may find the device manufacturer's engine or any third-party text-to-speech engines that you've downloaded from the Google Play Store.
You can also change the settings for your selected text-to-speech engine by clicking the Settings next to the name of your preferred engine. As the picture shows below:
Speech rate: Select the speed at which text is spoken.
Listen to an example: You will hear a short demonstration example of speech synthesis.
Default language status: Here your device displays the current status of your default language (such as "fully supported"). You can change the default language in your preferred Text-to-speech engine we mentioned before.
This setting decides how much time it takes before your touch on the screen becomes an effective touch and hold. You can select Short, Medium or Long.
When touch and hold delay becomes longer, you need to keep your finger in the same place for a little bit longer till your touch becomes a touch and hold. If you tend to accidentally touch and hold when you just mean to tap, we suggest you go for the longer delay.
Color inversion exchanges color values. For instance, you will find black text on a white screen become white text on a black screen.
At first, I was trying to take a screenshot of what the phone looks like after color inversion, but I failed. I finally learned that the phone's screenshot function can not capture the color-inversed result. So I borrowed another phone and took the two photos as below.
Color inversion might not work correctly everywhere on your device because it is still an experimental feature.
The color correction setting enables your device to compensate for color blindness.
To change the color correction mode, select Correction mode, then choose one of the following options:
● Deuteranomaly (red-green)
● Protanomaly (red-green)
● Tritanomaly (blue-yellow)
Color correction is currently an experimental feature, so it might not work correctly everywhere on your device.
Conclusion |
This wraps up the list of functions available under Accessibility on the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4. I hope this article has provided you with some helpful insights. Please note that the model I've used for this post is the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4, the way these functions work on other phones may be slightly different.
