The Q7 gets a facelift. Four years after the presentation of the second generation, Audi is once again sharpening its looks and re-sharpening its large SUV. Between 2005 and 2018 the Q7 was the flagship SUV at Audi, then the Q8 replaced it. But what you can't take from the Q7 anymore? It was the first SUV at the brand with the four rings. The market launch for the new Q7 is scheduled for September 2019.
Audi does not save on optical changes in the Q7. The front of the facelift is more muscular than its predecessor. The standard single-frame grille is now octagonal and has vertical instead of horizontal struts. This should make the Q7 visually larger. Thick chrome edge? History! Now the Q7 has a narrow frame around the grill. Audi has also adapted the design of the headlights. In the future they will be much more angular and larger on the sides of the vehicle. As standard they are available in LED, optionally the range extends to HD matrix LED light. The daytime running light is oriented towards the brand siblings and has the typical beam shape. The air intakes in the apron become larger, the underride guard more prominent, at least in the S-line. The Ingolstadt-based company has not changed the silhouette, but a new sill trim is to additionally emphasise the ground clearance of the Q7. 18-inch wheels are standard, but customers can optionally upgrade to 22-inch wheels. The rear of the facelift has been completely redesigned. Here, too, the new rear lights are larger from the inside to the outside. They also have the typical beam look, which extends the shoulder line of the side. The lights are connected by a chrome strip. The number plate can now be found on a flat surface. The recess for the license plate is therefore history. The new Q7 in the S-line also has a striking diffuser at the rear.
The Q7 has grown by 11 millimetres in length (5.06 m) for the facelift. Its width is 1.97 m. Including the roof antenna, it is the same height as its predecessor at 1.74 m; the wheelbase also remains unchanged at 2.99 m.
Audi also donates the MMI touch response infotainment system to the Q7 for a facelift. It replaces the previous MMI and now places two displays in the centre console. They have haptic feedback, the previous touchpad disappears. All in all, the interior is now reminiscent of the Q8. Nothing has changed in terms of quality, as Audi has been accustomed to for years, the workmanship in the first check is impeccable. The Q7 is still optionally available with a virtual cockpit, while the base remains the classic analogue instrument cluster. The seating comfort is good and the sports seats in the photo vehicle are pleasantly sporty without being obtrusive. If you want more support, you can tick the "S sports seats plus" option, which even includes pneumatic side bolsters.
There's still plenty of room in row two. Even tall people will survive the long haul here. The third row looks different. Although the seats here should not be treated as emergency places if Audi is to be reached, children will have fun here at most. Although the Q7 offers more space at the rear than other vehicles, the seating position with angled legs is still not really comfortable.
The Ingolstadt-based company limits itself to only two equipment variants for the lifted Q7, Basis and S-line. The interior looks different. Even the basic package offers up to four different options for the seat covers. On the S-line, the sports steering wheel and sports seats are fitted as standard in the large SUV, and the chassis is also more tightly tuned. Those who want it exclusive can set individual accents with the "Audi exclusiv" range. All three interior options can be freely combined with the exterior.
The Q7 can still be ordered as a five-seater or seven-seater. Depending on the seat configuration, the boot volume can also be designed. The five-seater comes to 865 litres in normal operation, if the backrests of the second row of seats are folded down, it is up to 2050 litres - 25 litres less than the predecessor. Audi has not yet given any concrete figures for the seven-seater. Here, however, the volume will be reduced by a good deal as the third row of seats will be electrically lowered into the boot floor.
Audi offers a range of assistance systems for the facelift of the Q7. They are divided into the Tour and City packages. The adaptive driving assistant, which is part of the Tour package, combines the functions of the "adaptive cruise control", the traffic jam assistant and the lane guidance assistant. This should make driving more relaxed and relieve the driver. With the efficiency assistant, the Q7 decelerates and accelerates independently, using data from sensors, navigation data and traffic sign recognition.
The "City" assistance package includes the "Audi pre sense 360°" systems, the intersection assistant, the lane change warning, the exit warning and the rear cross-traffic assistant.
Particularly exciting: Like the A4, the Q7 receives traffic light information played into its system. If the navigation option "MMI Navigation plus" is ticked, the Audi is granted access to the central traffic light server in selected cities. Based on the traffic light data, the Q7 proposes speed suggestions. This is to avoid unnecessary braking at red traffic lights. If you are already standing at a red traffic light, the remaining time until the next green phase is displayed in the virtual cockpit.
Like its big brother Q8, the Q7 also relies on the MMI touch response infotainment from the facelift. This allows almost all functions of the Ingolstadter to be operated via two screens. The "MMI Radio" is fitted as standard. Here the upper screen measures only 8.8 inches, the instrument cluster is still partially analogue. Instead, the top navigation device has the virtual cockpit and a 10.1 inch monitor at the top. As an option, there is also a head-up display for the driver. Infotainment at the top, vehicle operation at the bottom. The smaller monitor at the bottom of the centre console is used for climate control and vehicle adjustment. The whole thing is operated by touch or voice.
For the first time, a Q7 with optional electronic roll stabilization (EAWS) comes to the customer. Together with the improved all-wheel steering, the SUV should be able to drive even more agile on winding country roads. All Q7s are equipped with the "Audi drive select" driving dynamics system as standard. Here the driver can choose from various settings, from comfortably soft to sporty hard. On the motorway, the large SUV automatically lowers by up to three centimetres to improve aerodynamics. All seven-seaters are fitted with air suspension as standard in the Q7, while those who choose the S-line package are fitted with a sports suspension. A steel chassis is installed in the base.
Each of the three engines in the Q7 comes as a 48V mild hybrid. Two diesel and one petrol engine will be available from market launch around September. Both diesel and gasoline will be using a three-litre V6. The Q7 delivers 231 hp as a 45 TDI and develops 500 Nm of torque. The more powerful Q7 50 TDI produces 286 hp and 600 Nm. The top model is the only petrol engine in the portfolio. The 55 TFSI delivers 340 hp and 500 Nm of torque. The 55 TFSIe plug-in hybrid will follow later. The heart of the 48V electrification is the belt-starter generator (RSG). It supplies the 48V vehicle electrical system with power. When braking, it recuperates with up to 8 kW into the battery of the Q7. All motors are equipped with an eight-speed tiptronic. The Quattro all-wheel drive is standard on every model. So far, prices can only be speculated on. However, AUTO BILD assumes that the Q7 will remain fairly stable in price. The Q7 is currently starting at 64,100 euros.
