Beats, a well-known headphone manufacturer, recently announced that Powerbeats Pro, a true wireless headphone, will be officially released in May. It will also offer a free charging case like the Apple AirPods. The two headphones have a lot in common, but there are also some differences. Compared with AirPods, Powerbeats Pro looks more like sport earphones. Now, let's make a comparison between the two headphones.

Design: in-ear type + hang type

You can tell the difference between the two earphones in appearance. The second generation of AirPods inherits the design of the first generation, which can meet the wearing needs of most people. But there are still some users who worry that it will fall out of their ears because the headphones do not have any anti-slip mechanism.

in-ear type + hang type design

Beats Powerbeats Pro is different. Apparently designed for sports enthusiasts, it also inherits the appearance of previous generations of products, in which the ear hanging part ensures that headphones do not slip. This is very attractive for users with strong sports needs.

In addition, Powerbeats Pro is an ear-in product, which is different from AIRPODS. Beats carefully equipped it with four sizes of earplugs, and the ear hanging parts can also be adjusted.

One thing to note is that Powerbeats Pro has physical keys on each earphone, which is different from AIRPODS. Apple's second-generation AirPods adopts the gesture control, but Powerbeats Pro is different. Beats has added physical keys to the headphone so that users don't have to pull out the phone when use it. The advantage is that it is more reliable to operate. Of course, Powerbeats Pro has no physical power button.

In size, though Apple claims that Powerbeats Pro is 23% smaller and 17% lighter than its predecessors, AirPods is still much smaller. The size of a single headphone means that the charging box is the same. AirPods has a smaller and more compact charging box, while Powerbeats Pro has a larger, flip-over type charging box, which is not as portable as the AirPods charging box.

In addition, Powerbeats Pro has an anti-sweat and water-proof function, which is also a necessary condition for sports headphones. Apple didn't mention the waterproof rating of it, but it's no problem if it is around daily sweat. In fact, when we tested AirPods before, we found that AirPods also had the corresponding capabilities, which Apple did not mention.

Battery: longer battery life but no wireless charging

Another advantage of Powerbeats Pro over Aripods is its endurance, with a single listening time lasting up to 9 hours and 24 hours with a charging box. AirPoids can last for five hours at a time and can be charged with a charging box for more than 24 hours.

In fact, when we tested AirPods, we found that a five-hour endurance was sufficient, because almost no one would use headphones for five hours in a row. Of course, the longer it lasts, the better it will be. If it can make people forget about charging, the experience will be better.

AirPods 2 vs Powerbeats Pro battery life

In terms of fast charging, Powerbeats Pro is also better. AirPods can add 3 hours of endurance when charged for 15 minutes, Powerbeats Pro has 1.5 hours of endurance when charged for 5 minutes and 4.5 hours of endurance for 15 minutes.

Unfortunately, Powerbeats Pro does not support wireless charging and can only be charged through the cable of Lightning interface. This means that Powerbeats Pro won't be able to enjoy this benefit if Apple launches an iPhone with reverse wireless charging this year.

Chip: the same level as Aripods

Like AirPods, Powerbeats Pro uses Apple's latest H1 chip. With this chip, Powerbeats Pro can seamlessly switch between Apple devices, while supporting the "Hi Siri" function.

when evaluating AirPods, we mentioned that H1 chips have many benefits, including sound quality. We haven't got this headphone, so we can't evaluate the difference between Powerbeats Pro and IrPods, but imagine that the advantage of ear-in design is that passive noise reduction is better, and it can isolate a large part of the ambient sound.

Buying advice: more suitable for outdoor sports

When it comes to buying advice, you can't avoid the price anyway. After the price adjustment on Apple's official website, the new AirPods with wireless charging case edition sells for $199 and the AirPods with common charging case edtion sells for $159. Powerbeats Pro will be priced at about $250.

Therefore, if you're a sports enthusiast, or you don’t like the AirPods style in-ear type earphones, or you like other colors other than white, you can consider this Powerbeats Pro true wireless headphone. But if you just use it to listen to music and answer the phone, why not buy AirPods with a stronger sense of technology and a cheaper price?
