AMD and NVIDIA on Computex 2019

The 2019 edition of Computex opens on 27 May in Taipei. An edition expected so much it is at the crossroads of various changes of scale in the sector.

Computex 2019

Each year, the conferences follow one another and are similar: CES in Las Vegas, MWC in Barcelona, Computex in Taipei, E3 in Los Angeles, IFA in Berlin, etc. This is enough to stimulate the new technologies sector, allowing manufacturers to multiply the number of announcements and new products that are more or less exciting.

But in Taipei, the atmosphere seems different this year. It must be said that the sector is in turmoil, two years after AMD's comeback, one year after the GeForce RTX announcement, with a TSMC that is a big winner of the ongoing redesign. But more generally, it is the PC that continues to reinvent itself.

This can be seen in initiatives towards new formats (portable or not), new uses such as Cloud Gaming, the integration of components capable of accelerating calculations related to artificial intelligence (inference), and the ever-increasing reduction in the size of components with identical performance.

AMD wants to keep breaking everything down

In its own way, AMD wants to be one of the accelerators of this transformation. Its playing field is certainly limited, the CPUs and GPUs for servers and consumer PCs (including game consoles), but it is already enough to impose its brand, especially on a leading Intel but in a difficult period.

Two years ago, Ryzen changed the game by offering more hearts throughout the market at an ultra-competitive price. This will improve the situation for entry-level machines as well as workstations and other servers with Threadripper and then EPYC.

Today, the company will unveil new details on its range with 7 nm engraving fineness, renewed architecture and even more hearts.

In other words, the game looks tight for Intel, which only has a Core i9-9900KS with no price or release date to oppose, no short-term strategy other than relying on market inertia and its good image. Especially with players who swear only by frequency, able to spend much more to get a few fps.

The latest rumours are in the direction of a real slap in performance, even questioning the interest of the current 12- and 16-core Threadrippers. However, we will have to wait for concrete announcements to get to the bottom of it. Let's hope that AMD will not deliver a service as disappointing as at the CES in Las Vegas and will give us many details: characteristics of the entire range, performance, price and availability.

Navi: the other AMD battle

Especially since Texan is expected on another field: that of graphic cards. The company must say more about Navi, the next architecture at the heart of its Radeons.

Although expectations are high, we should not expect a technological revolution, but rather a major adjustment of the current architecture, allowing the company to return to the mid-range. The latest rumors are in favour of RX 3070 and RX 3080, which will mainly attack NVIDIA's RTX 2070 and RTX 2080.

Thus, the Radeon VII will always be the most top-of-the-range model, facing the RTX 2080, with the top models remaining unrivalled for the moment. The main issues will be the price of these cards, but also their energy efficiency, which was one of the major shortcomings of the current offer.

Especially since this generation of GPUs will be the focus of attention at the E3 in Los Angeles, as it will equip the next game consoles. The evolution of AMD's position regarding functionalities such as ray tracing or AI-related calculations will thus be closely monitored.

Intel and NVIDIA: two different attitudes

As we have seen, in the face of this wave, Intel seems to be out of date for the moment. The former CEO of the founder did not prepare the company for strong and fast competition, resting on his laurels. It will probably take until 2020 to find the Santa Clara giant a start in terms of products to match.

Next year, the manufacturer will offer its own GPUs Xe, other than integrated into a processor. A subject that should be discussed at Computex even if it is unlikely that concrete announcements will be made at tomorrow's press conference.

At NVIDIA, it's different. The company is a leader in terms of market share and innovation. Although criticized, its GeForce/Quadro range based on the Turing architecture is undoubtedly the most efficient and effective of the moment. This does not prevent the company from teasing on a "Super" ad.

A simple evolution of the GeForce RTX, a new generation to come, an announcement of a product that has nothing to do with it? Here too, we will find out more at the press conference to be held in the morning (8am). And if all this were not just a marketing poker move, we'll come back in more detail to what's being announced soon.
