AMD announces 16-Core Ryzen 9 3950X and Navi RX 5700 XT GPU

We are still in the middle of E3 2019, where today has been the day of the PC. At 19:00 has taken place the PC Gaming Show, the star conference where the best new titles are presented for PC, which has been followed by the Ubisoft conference. However, AMD still had an ace up its sleeve for the AMD Next Horizon conference: its new 16-core beast and all the details of its new 7nm Navi graphics cards.

AMD Radeon RX 5700 and 5700 XT: features and price from 379 dollars

While AMD has taken the lead over Intel in sales, the company has yet to catch up with NVIDIA. RTXs are a wonder of technology, and launching high-end models that can compete against them is more complicated than it seemed. For now, the date of sale of the RX 5700 was also announced at Computex for July this year, and we already know the price, features and performance of the two models.

Navi offers 25% more performance per frequency, being 50% more efficient per watt, thanks to being based on 7 nm and having a new architecture with RDNA. However, while technical data was shown, many were missing. Now we know them all.

The AMD RX 5700 XT has 40 Compute Units, 64 ROPs and 2,560 Stream Processors. The base frequency is 1.605 MHz, 1.755 MHz Game Clock, and 1.905 MHz in Boost Mode, being an interesting novelty the fact that there is a new frequency to play, but that this is not the maximum. The card will have 8 GB of VRAM GDDR6, with a maximum performance of 9,75 TFLOPs. The TDP is 225 W. Its price will be $449, considerably cheaper than the RTX 2070.

Along with it will come a trimmed model, the AMD RX 5700, with 36 Compute Units, 64 ROPs and 2.304 Stream Processors. The frequency is also somewhat lower, with 1.465 MHz base frequency, 1.625 MHz Game Clock and 1.725 MHz Boost Clock. It has 8 GB of VRAM, and 7.95 TFLOPs of performance. The TDP is 180 W. Its price will be 379 dollars, a figure similar to the RTX 2060.

Both cards feature HDMI 2.0, DisplayPort 1.4 with DSC and support for PCIe 4.0. HEVC encoding is enhanced, supporting 8K and HDR, with speeds up to 40% higher. They will be on sale on July 7, and when you buy a RX 5700 card you get 3 months free of Xbox Game Pass for PC (pack that will also arrive with some Ryzen CPUs).

Also, AMD has announced FidelityFX, a suite of open source tools for developers to include new technologies that improve the level of detail in games. This tool is a response to NVIDIA DLSS, with the advantage of being open and not smearing the images. Radeon Image Sharpening will do the same, and will be available for new cards on the day of launch.

To avoid lag, AMD has also announced Radeon Anti-Lag: a feature that reduces the lag between images produced by the graphics card and how long it takes to get to the monitor, including delaying the input of our mouse or keyboard. With this, with an RTX 2070 at 60 FPS, the latency is 59 ms, while in the RX 5700 is 55.7 ms without Anti-Lag, and 45 ms with the function activated, almost a frame advantage. On average, it's 31% faster.

Finally, AMD has also announced a 5700 XT 50th Anniversary Edition in honor of the company's 50th anniversary. The specifications of the card are the same as the base version, but with a higher boost clock. It will be available on the company's website exclusively.

AMD Ryzen 9 3950X: its new 16-core beast to play with

At Computex 2019, AMD announced the first Ryzen 3000 with 7nm Zen 2 architecture, with the Ryzen 9 3900X at the top with 12 cores and 24 threads. However, we all knew that the company could equip 16 cores, since the chiplet they showed at the beginning of the year had 8 cores, a single chiplet, and the space needed to incorporate another 8 cores.

Said and done, AMD has reserved its best processor to play for the end of its conference at E3, where it has unveiled the Ryzen 9 3950X. This chip is a real beast, equipping 16 cores and 32 threads, with a base frequency of 3.5 GHz and 4.7 GHz Boost. The TDP stays at "only" 105 W, which is the same as consumed by the Ryzen 7 3800X and the Ryzen 9 3900X despite having fewer cores and lower frequency. The key is in the base frequency, which has to go down to 3.5 GHz to compensate. The total sum of the cache is 72 MB.

The processor will be on sale later than the rest. While the first will be on sale on July 7, this chip will go to September, with a price of $749 (ay). The company has broken Cinebench's record with this chip for all 16 cores.

New APUs: AMD Ryzen 3 3200G and Ryzen 5 2400G

AMD has not shown these new APUs, but they were filtered hours before the conference: the AMD Ryzen 3 3200G and Ryzen 5 2400G. Both are based on the previous 12nm Zen+ architecture, as they are intended for an entry-level market with integrated GPU. Both have a power consumption of 65W.

The Ryzen 5 3400G has 4 cores and 8 wires, with a base frequency of 3.7 GHz and Boost of 4.2 GHz. The price is $149. It incorporates an integrated RX Vega 11 GPU, and includes the AMD Wraith Spire heatsink for up to 95 W of dissipation. It also has the soldered IHS.

The Ryzen 3 3200G has 4 cores and 4 wires, not counting SMT. The base frequency is 3.6 GHz, and Boost 4.0 GHz. The price is 99 dollars. It incorporates an integrated GPU RX Vega 8, and the pack includes the AMD Wraith Stealh as dissipater.
