To transfer files between two devices, Bluetooth is often preferred. But one feature on Android smartphones is set aside in the collective imagination despite its practicality: Android Beam.
This feature, available on all Android devices with an NFC chip, allows you to activate file transfer simply by pasting two smartphones together for a few seconds. A way often forgotten because of a decrescendo communication from Google that seemed to be less and less interested in it and that could even sound the death knell.
With the introduction of the Android 10 Q beta, some have noticed the absence of this feature. We first imagined a lack of compatibility that would be fixed in future versions. But on the second, still no Android Beam, and the same for the third release last Tuesday.
We were then beginning to be rather afraid for Beam's future and Google definitively announced to TechRadar through one of their spokespersons that the sharing feature would no longer be available from Android 10 Q. This decision is probably motivated by a desire to make way for Files by Google's file transfer system.
This transfer system combines Bluetooth and Wi-Fi for exchanges of up to 480 MB per second. For the moment, it is only available from the application and you can only exchange files with a device that has downloaded it. If Google wants to promote this means of sharing, it should arrive natively on Android in the near future.
Only time will tell who will replace Android Beam or whether Bluetooth or third-party services will be enough.
