This Tuesday, at the Google I/O conference, the Mountain View company unveiled many features now integrated into the Android 10 Q beta. The publisher has also released a new beta version of the mobile operating system.
This new beta allows you to discover a new gesture navigation system, different from the one integrated in Android 9.0 Pie. The bar at the bottom of the screen is therefore longer and much thinner. Above all, it is no longer accompanied by a back button to go back. The gestural navigation thus becomes completely gestural.
To return to the Home screen, simply slide your finger up and down. To open the multitask, simply leave your finger pressed a few moments after raising it from the bottom of the phone. To open Google Assistant, you must slide your finger from one of the lower corners towards the center. Finally, for the return, it is now enough to slide your finger from one side to the center of the screen.
A navigation that is more inspired by the one available on iOS, but which takes up for example the gesture of return of EMUI or MIUI. This will exist with the navigation buttons. Users will be able to choose whether they prefer buttons or gestures when installing their smartphone.
Google wants to be particularly proactive about this new gestural navigation. According to the Android Authority, "Google strongly encourages manufacturers to adopt Android's new default browsing gestures.
Nevertheless, they will still be able to offer their own sign language navigation as Allen Huang, head of the Android interface, said: "We see the manufacturers' actions as an option for advanced users". If the manufacturer offers its own system, it will therefore have to offer the user a choice between three options: its own sign language navigation, Google's, or the navigation buttons.
One of the difficulties in adopting several different types of gestures concerns application developers. They must redouble their efforts to ensure that the interface of their services does not come into confrontation with the actions of a manufacturer. At a conference at Google I/O, one of Google's managers quoted by XDA Developers explained that "thinking about X navigation gestures when developing, designing or testing your application is pretty crazy".
