Apple AirPods and other wireless headsets may pose a cancer risk, accuse the signatories of a petition addressed to the United Nations and the World Health Organization against these devices, which has reignited the debate around the health implications for users.
The warning, which was signed by some 250 scientists, points out that this type of hearing aids could be emitting dangerous radiation directly to the brain, as they are located deep within the auditory canal exposing these fragile parts of the ear to dangerous radiations, experts warn.
"My concern about AirPods is that their placement in the ear canal exposes the tissues of the head to relatively high levels of radiofrequency radiation," explained Jerry Phillips, professor of biochemistry at the University of Colorado, in Medium.
The petition sent to the United Nations also warns against numerous devices that emit radiofrequency radiation - used in WiFi, cellular data and Bluetooth- close to the head.
After the launch of the AirPods in 2015, the debate started around the safety of radiation emitting devices, and the consensus among some scientists was that the risk is low or has not been proven, but likewise others were concerned.
Apple's response from then until now has been that its products are designed and tested "to meet or exceed all safety requirements," Apple spokesman Alex Kirschner said at the time.
Animal studies of the type of RF radiation they emit have suggested a link to cancer. But the WHO has said the levels emitted are well below what could be considered harmful. Other groups believe that when looking at the combined studies, the evidence suggests that there is no danger at all.
The scientific jury is still out on whether or not these devices can cause cancer.
