Apple renews iPod touch after four years

With a newer processor, the iOS iPod supports AR apps and FaceTime group calls for the first time. Apple does without biometric access protection. Apple breathes new life into iPod touch. The seventh generation of the iOS entry-level device is now equipped with Apple's A10 fusion chip from the iPhone 7, replacing the old A8 processor of its predecessor. The manufacturer promises that this will double performance.

AR apps and FaceTime group calls for iPod touch

With the newer processor, iPod touch now supports features that were not available in the previous sixth generation: The group FaceTime calls introduced last year are now also supported on the last remaining iPod - as are augmented reality applications. Apple's ARKit technology - and thus most AR apps - require at least one A9 chip.

Externally, the new iPod touch remains unchanged, retaining the 4-inch display with a resolution of 1136 x 640 pixels (326 dpi). There seem to be no innovations in the camera or wireless interfaces either. iPod touch 7 continues to use a home button and does without biometric access protection - Apple's Touch ID fingerprint scanner is missing.

As before, the 32-GByte version of the iPod touch 7 costs just under 230 Euro, while the 128-GByte model costs just under 340 Euro. For the first time Apple offers the iPod touch with 256 GByte storage space - for almost 450 Euro. It is available in Space Grey, White, Gold, Blue, Pink and Red.

Will iOS 13 cancel support for iPhone 6 and 5s

The iPod touch was last updated by Apple almost four years ago. Concrete indications of a new iPod touch release were already found in iOS 12.2 at the beginning of the year. The hardware announcement shortly before the WWDC developer conference next Monday gives reason to speculate that iOS 13 might cancel support for Apple's A7 and A8 chips. Developers like to use the iPod touch as a comparatively cheap test device to test early betas of the operating system. A first developer beta of iOS 13 should be released at the WWDC opening in early June.
