Apple's Smartwatches have been selling better than all other wearables for years - as well as in 2018, according to the International Data Corporation. The test of COMPUTER BILD proves the customers right: The current model Apple Watch Series 4 is the best Smartwatch in the test. So it's no wonder that the technology world is already speculating about the successor Apple Watch Series 5. A patent now provides the indication of more health functions in the new Smartwatch. Here you can read the rumors about the design and features of the Apple Watch 5.
< The shape and size of the Apple Watch should not change much with the Series 5. After all, Apple has only recently revised the design: The Series 4 offers larger displays and a flatter enclosure. As Apple Insider reports with reference to the analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the company from Cupertino wants to return the complete ceramic housing. Apple offered this with the Edition versions of the Apple Watch Series 2 and the Apple Watch Series 3. The underside of the Series 4 case is made of ceramic, the rest of the case is made of aluminium or stainless steel.
There is various information about the display technology. Apple currently uses OLED screens. The Reuters news agency has learned from the supply chain that Apple is relying on OLED displays from Japan Display for the Series 5. For years there have been rumours that Apple is working on micro LED technology. The self-luminous pixels offer the advantage that they work more energy-saving. A patent published in February 2019 shows a flexible display based on this technology. Whether and how Apple uses this is, as always, unclear.
Apple has been focusing on fitness and health functions for years with its Smartwatch. For example, the Apple Watch 4 detects atrial fibrillation using an electrocardiogram (ECG). The successor could, for example, measure the blood sugar content - a practical function for diabetics. This is possible thanks to sensors that Apple is currently developing. A patent, which became public in August 2018, shows the corresponding technology with special light sensor technology, which makes blood glucose measurement without puncture ("non-invasive") possible. Apple is also working on odor sensors, as shown by another patent that appeared in April 2019. These sensors could detect and analyze the wearer's sweat, sniff out blood sugar or warn the user if the air is polluted.
As an unspecified source from the Bloomberg news agency revealed at the end of February 2019, Apple is finally giving its Smartwatch the feature that users most want: sleep tracking. Behind the unwieldy designation nothing else hides itself as a function, with which users record and analyze their sleep behavior. Most users charge their Apple Watch at night because of the limited battery life, so they don't wear it on their wrist; however, this is necessary to monitor sleep.
According to the report, Apple must either increase the capacity of the Watch battery or make the feature as energy-efficient as possible for sleep tracking. The company is trying out how this could work with its employees, who have probably been using the function for months. So with the next Apple Watch, do users not only monitor their heart rhythm, but also their sleep patterns? Bloomberg denies that the technology will not be available to the general public until 2020 at the earliest. But perhaps it will work earlier, since Apple - with the takeover of the start-up Beddit - has already had the necessary technology since 2017.
As always, Apple doesn't reveal when the next Apple Watch is coming. Provided that the company maintains the cycle, users expect the next model in September 2019 - as in the past four years.
