Asus Zenfone 6 review:Folding Camera, Battery

ByAdeline Belluz 2019-05-29 483

Asus delivers with the new Zenfone 6 an exciting smartphone with interesting camera construction. Did it click? The practice test! Are you looking for something different in the face of increasingly similar smartphones? Well, some cell phone manufacturers have attractive smartphone daughters in the hindquarters. The Asus Zenfone 6 for example. This carries the latest top hardware and surprises with its fold-down camera. COMPUTER BILD makes the practice test

Asus Zenfone 6: Oh OLED, you're missing!

The exotic from Taiwan does not have to hide from the established competition - the rear of the Zenfone 6 is made of noble glass, the sides are rounded like the Galaxy S10 and Huawei P30 Pro. Only the sharp-edged transition to the aluminum side frame bothers something, subtraction in the Design B-grade. Too bad: A water rate is not the flagship - officially lacks the IP certification for waterproofness.

From the front, the Asus looks as modern as the elite: frames are hardly available with a 92 percent display area, only a small touch of black bars is left over on the underside. With the 6.4-inch display Asus meets the nerve of the time, but one omits incomprehensibly on an OLED screen. Although the dusty LCD provides attractive colors and good contrast for LC conditions, the brightness would have been higher. The sharpness of 2340x1080 pixels (Full HD Plus) is still fine, the pixel density is at 403 pixels per inch (ppi) on the level of the mobile phone Primus P30 Pro (398 ppi).

Monster battery and a lot of power

Under the hood, the Zenfone 6 then unfolds its full splendor: With the Snapdragon 855, the currently fastest mobile phone processor is on board. Along with 6 gigabytes of RAM, the Asus belongs to the pace elite - Apps start without delay, games run smoothly on the screen. Meaningful step: Unlike in the past, the Taiwanese have no longer garbed the Android 9 interface with a confusing extra design and all sorts of additional software. Impressive is the endurance of Zenfone: With 5,000 mAh, the 6 Series has the largest battery in the luxury class. In fact, in the benchmark test, it put the competition in the shade. You do not need a powerbank anymore. But the smart phone weighs 190 grams - almost two bars of chocolate. Too bad: wireless charging is not possible.

Foldable camera for panoramas

The real attraction of the Zenfone 6, however, is the rear camera: the 48 and 13 megapixel duo delivers impressive snapshots with high levels of detail and natural colors every day, without, however, shining like the Pixel 3 and iPhone XS. This impresses the mechanics: Asus saves the front camera - and folds the team just 180 degrees. Good for selfies, but that's especially handy with Panoramas. Instead of turning the camera as usual, the camera simply slows down the track. So the picture is less blurred, but still needs a firm footing (tripod or flat surface), because the software compensates Wackler worse. Exciting is the question of the longevity of the mechanism: Between the device and the camera is a small gap that could attract dust and dirt.
