Because while a normal headset used to be enough, today it looks different. It's hard for you to use On- or Over-Ear when running, at least I can. Previously in use: The Apple AirPods. They work well for me, although I have to readjust them every now and then when I'm running, of course, because they "jerk loose" at some point during movements. That's why it was great that I could try the Beats Powerbeats Pro. They were introduced at the beginning of April 2019 and have been available in Germany since May 31st - the official market launch will be on June 7th.
The Beats Powerbeats Pro comes with a case, a Lightning cable (USB-A fits to every power supply) and four earplug sets. One has smaller ear cups than the other and wants to shield the outer auditory canal appropriately. That's what the plugs are for.
The Powerbeats Pro come in a case which also charges them directly. That's what they have in common with Apple's AirPods. But: Due to the other design and the battery, the case is much bigger. While you may be able to place a battery case for the AirPods easy in your trouser pocket on the go, you don't do this with the Powerbeats Pro. However, you also have to see the area of application here. Of course, you can use the Powerbeats Pro in your non-sporting life, but they are also aimed at athletes, especially because of the fact that they are attached to the ear with a bracket and are also protected against sweat and water - but for swimmers IP4 should be less something.
The Powerbeats Pro's earhooks are tight but flexible enough to fit the ear. I would describe the wearing comfort over several hours as very good, I had no problems with aching ears or anything else. The earpieces are simply sitting well and, in my opinion, already dampen the auditory canal well in mode without music.
The Powerbeats Pro can of course be operated via a smartphone, but especially during a workout you will hardly have it in your hand. Therefore you can - as with the new AirPods from Apple - command Siri to do something with the H1 chip, alternatively and / or when using an Android smartphone, you can operate the handset via buttons on the surface.
Here you have the volume control as well as the control for the music. By the way, you control it with only one button, the one with the "B". If you press it once, it pauses, a double tap jumps to the next track and executing it three times jumps back one song. Incoming calls? You can reject the "B" with a longpress. If you take out the listeners, then you pause, an insertion provides for the playback. If you wonder if you can only use one listener: Possible. Such real buttons? Everybody who forgot his AirPods configuration will love it, if he looked into the Bluetooth settings at all and changed something.
The Powerbeats Pro cut a good figure when it comes to batteries in tests at sports events and at the desk. You say up to 9 hours, even if you don't listen at the highest volume level all the time. And when things get really cramped, you can put the handsets in the transport box and leave them there for a few minutes - then after about 5 minutes you have steam again for just under an hour of music (not at full volume).
Although that's probably not the typical scenario either, I think. I put the Powerbeats Pro into the case after the sport or after use, so they were always charged. But of course the case doesn't always have infinite energy either, it doesn't charge the listeners twice. In other words: One speaks of more than 24 hours of combined playing time. What I was missing was the detailed indicator for the charge state of the case. Of course, if the case falls below 40% capacity and the listeners cannot be charged completely (if they are empty), it glows red. A bit more accurate would have been nice. But under iOS you can use the battery widget, alternatively the Apple Watch. Finally: The battery life depends on the device settings, the environment, the usage and many other factors.
And of course very important: the sound. I would subjectively say that these are the beats headphones that have the best sound yet in their class. There is bass, but not this exaggerated one and I found myself in good hands musically in almost every genre. Beats has outgrown the "old" bass phase. They are also loud enough - but of course you shouldn't listen at maximum volume all the time - watch your ears.
The shielding from the outside world I would describe as good, but the Powerbeats Pro have no Active Noise Cancelling, instead the hopefully well fitting earphones take care of the shielding. I myself found it pleasant to walk around our boat pond nearby, even when there was outside noise, but you only get wind when it comes directly to your ears. Finally, subjectively: They sound better than Apple AirPods. In this price range, you'll certainly find wireless headphones that sound even better - but that don't offer this sports focus and running time.
Nothing to complain about? The case is of course absurdly large, but this is due to the design of the Powerbeats Pro. Nothing for your trouser pocket, but also no big problem for your bag or backpack. Maybe it should have been wireless at a price of 250 Euro. Although the Powerbeats Pro are also intended for Android, the case has a Lightning connector. Sure, you belong to Apple, but you should have used USB-C.
Finally: Great listeners, whereby I see them in the focus sport / fitness. They sit firmly and offer very attractive sound quality, both during running, barbell training and punching ball, which also has to serve with me.
