ByIngrid You 2019-05-30 2279

Underdogs, high flyers and insider tips. In 2018 and 2019 a few really good tablets of all price classes were born. In this comparative test, we'll look at the best tablet PCs for you once again, compare their advantages and disadvantages, and choose a test winner in 2018 and a test winner in 2019. You'll find tablets from Apple and Amazon as well as tablets from manufacturers such as Huawei, Lenovo, Microsoft and Samsung.

When you say tablet PC, you often mean Apple's iPad. But on the one hand, the choice of iPad models is huge. If you are already sure that it should be a tablet from Apple, then turn right here to our detailed iPad purchase advice. On the other hand, it might be worth taking a look at the Windows and Android competition in 2018. In this comparison test, the Apple iPad 6, the Huawei MediaPad M5, the Microsoft Surface Pro 6, and the iPad Pro 12.9 are among the products that compete against each other. The tablet comparison shows one model to be the test winner in 2018. We assume that this year the manufacturers will no longer be planning any major new announcements and that interesting new tablet PCs will not be launched on the market until 2019. Otherwise we will adjust this overview accordingly.

When buying a Tablet PC, you should also pay attention to what operating system we think offers the most advantages and much more can be found in our detailed purchase advice. Here you can see not only the Tablet-PCs, which are illuminated here, but all Tablets, which we tested last year.

Smartphone vs. Tablet PC, Tablet PC vs. Notebook

The year is 2019 - and tablet PCs are no longer on everyone's lips as they were two or three years ago. There are many reasons for this: ever better smartphones with ever larger displays, for example, are one. Since manufacturers have been bringing the smartphones down millimetre by millimetre and people are more and more willing to carry large smartphones in their trouser pockets, the demand for classic tablet computers has fallen further. In addition, high-quality tablets are being used longer and longer.

The two big manufacturers Apple and Samsung are responding to this trend with different approaches. While Apple, for example, offers its iPad Pro models plenty of performance, Samsung's Galaxy Tab S series uses the special desktop mode DeX. The tablet is connected to a screen with a mouse and keyboard to create a real desktop alternative, according to the idea.

But no matter if iPad Pro or Galaxy Tab S4 with DeX mode, in both cases the tablet can't replace a notebook or the desktop in our opinion. If you attach importance to this and only want to own one device for all tasks, the Microsoft Surface Pro 6 is the best choice... So far we have only tested the previous generations, the new generation is mainly characterized by a CPU update.

High score list: Tablet comparison 2018 / 2019: The 10 best tablets tested

These tablet computers fully convinced us in 2018 and received a recommendation. You will find these models united in this overview.

Apple iPad Mini 5 (2019)

Such an iPad Mini with thick screen edges and Touch ID will probably never be seen again. It's quite possible that expensive foldables will close the gap. So now is a good time to think about buying an iPad Mini 5. Experience shows that iOS tablets can easily last four or five years. This puts the high price of the iPad Mini 5 into perspective.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S4

The Samsung Galaxy Tab S4 hardly needs to fear competition at the moment. It is equipped with a fantastically good display, offers a good keyboard cover in the accessories program and cameras and speakers are also on top level. The DeX mode is a very practical matter, which we gladly included in the test. But the Tab S4 isn't a permanent replacement for the notebook or the desktop - in the end it lacks performance and optimized apps.

Apple iPad Pro 11 / 12.9 (2018)

The iPad Pro vintage 2018 is a very strong piece of technology. But a notebook, even a MacBook, can hardly replace it. Performance is abundant and the touchscreen is brilliant. But a good computer also includes applications that the App Store doesn't offer, and routines that don't get the user out of his or her way, such as photo import. Apple says the iPad defines "what a computer should be able to do". On the other hand, in a professional environment it becomes more like a shoe. Those who have a purpose for the Apple Pencil and can make use of its enormous performance will definitely find the iPad Pro to be by far the best tablet computer of all time. With a strong emphasis on the word "tablet".

Microsoft Surface Go

The Surface Go is a very successful 2-in-1 system. As a notebook replacement it is only suitable for a short time due to its small screen diagonal for this purpose. A system intended for productive work simply must not be much more compact. First and foremost, we see the Surface Go as a multimedia tablet for surfing the net. If there are then short-term work orders on the agenda, it will also master them. For this requirement, the Go is the best surface.

Huawei MediaPad M5

When you say tablet, you often mean iPad. But if you want to stay in the Android universe for understandable reasons and are looking for a high quality, powerful device, there are hardly any alternatives except for the Samsung Galaxy Tab series. The Huawei MediaPad M5 is more than serious. A lot of good things come together here, but with a maximum of 32 gigabytes the storage space is far too limited.

Apple iPad (2018)

Anyone who still has an old iPad at home and is no longer satisfied with the performance: here comes the worthy successor. The iPad 6 is powerful enough to be prepared for the coming years. It scores with Apple Pencil support, but unfortunately lacks the Smart Connector. The bottom line is that the cheapest iPad is anything but a bad choice and will certainly make some iPad Pro buyers ponder.

Lenovo Yoga Book C930

Everything is new, everything is so different: the first time you try it out, the new Yoga Book C930 is a lot of fun. But the euphoria gets its first cracks when longer texts are to be typed on the E-Ink keyboard. It's not enough for more than medium-length notes. Lenovo is also not (yet) exploiting the full potential of the E-Ink display. The concept of a lightweight, flexible convertible with sufficient performance in itself is convincing all along the line. We take our hat off to Lenovo for this courageous concept, but wouldn't buy the Yoga Book C930 at this price because it's too compromising.
