BlackBerry KEY 2 4G smartphone: signature design with modern upgrades

There are several reasons why one might be interested in getting the new BlackBerry — but nostalgia is definitely a big one. The BlackBerry KEY 2 comes with the same full keyboard that made the phone a hit in 2008. But there are differences and upgrades even from last year’s KEYone. The KEYs are now backlit and 20% bigger than on the aforementioned KEYone.

With an accentuated nod to tradition, the BlackBerry KEY 2 sneaks in some notable upgrades. For instance, the phone’s space bar hides a fingerprint sensor. You can also scroll through pages on the screen by sliding your finger up, down, left and right on the surface of the keyboard.

The phone is very comfortable to hold and has been made with durability in mind. Thanks to the sturdy aluminum frame, it can take a fall. The back panel is comfortable covered with a rubber coating for a good grip. What’s missing in terms of protection is waterproofing — so make sure to get a proper case if you plan to take your phone swimming.

The biggest "problem" with the design (if it can even be considered one in the case of the BlackBerry) is the screen to keyboard ratio. While the trend of the smartphone world is getting rid of anything that gets in the way of the full-screen experience (check the Oppo Find X and the Vivo Nex), the BlackBerry K2’s display measures just 4.5 inches.

BlackBerry KEY 2 4G smartphone: two day battery life and 6GB RAM

Nope, you have not misread the title. At the time when most devices seem to be losing the battle for better battery life, the BlackBerry KEY 2 seems to be way ahead of even the greatest expectations. The phone’s 3500mAh battery will generate enough juice to last you through practically two days of moderate use. This means that you won’t have to carry a charger with you 24/7 or frantically search for power sources throughout the day — and this is what freedom feels like.

On the CPU-side, you get the mid-range Octa-Core Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 clocked at 2.2GHz in a productive combo with a generous amount of RAM — 6GB. You also get 64GB of storage expandable to up to 256GB with an SD card.

BlackBerry KEY 2 4G smartphone: the camera game

You are probably not expecting the BlackBerry KEY 2 to come with top of the line cameras rivaling the Huawei P9 — and you are right. However, the 12MP dual rear cam is decent enough to take good looking photos both indoors and outdoors. You can also enjoy the 2x zoom and a very basic portrait mode. The selfie shooter is 8MP, which will give you okay selfies — but snapping those selfies will be super easy thanks to the phone’s size and comfy grip.

BlackBerry KEY 2 4G smartphone: the verdict

So how does the BlackBerry K2 compare to the competition? The truth is, it’s in a league of its own. Crafted to be super efficient on-the-go thanks to its compact size, full keyboard, a good grip, and, most importantly, two-day battery life, it’s

a smartphone that’s perfect for the active and busy lifestyle. The Blackberry K2 "takes care of itself" while giving you most of the advantages of today’s smartphone functionality – minus the huge screen. And if it’s the functionality you’re after, the $649.99 phone will pay for itself in saved charging time and the tactile high of having a full keyboard.
