Computex 2019: ASUS teases the Prime Utopia Concept Motherboard
On the occasion of Asus' 30th anniversary, the manufacturer is presenting a series of products in a special edition at Computex. These include a polished X299 mainboard with new features and improvements. Asus also takes a look into the future with the Prime Utopia, which also features modular I/O.
Asus is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year and is using the current Computex to present some special products that will be released in an "Edition 30". As such, the manufacturer also refreshes an X299 motherboard. Asus will also be showing a modular concept mainboard.
Prime Utopia with rear PCI-E slot for graphics cards and modular I/O
It bears the name Prime Utopia and will remain in its present form only in the laboratories of Asus. The motherboard is not intended for end users. Instead, it is an early prototype that will demonstrate the future of Asus' high-end mainboards. Especially the cooling seems to play an integral role. The potential of high-core count CPUs and other system components is to be fully exploited through various optimizations, according to Asus.
Part of these optimizations is the relocation of the PCI-E slots to the back of the motherboard. The space freed up is used to accommodate a 7-inch OLED touch screen, which provides information on the status and is used to configure fans and BIOS, among other things. An integrated water cooling system with "tailor-made water cooling circuits" cools the CPU as well as the VRM phases, while a special fan header for independent control of up to four fans, the Hydra Cortex, was christened and patented to minimize the cable clutter. Asus also wants to make the latter technology ready for the market independently of the Utopia Prime and, according to its own statements, is currently working with various partners to this end. With the rear I/O of the Prime Utopia, users should be given the choice of which interfaces to use. Individual modules can be exchanged. Some moving pictures of Prime Utopia can be found in our video of Computex 2019 at the end of the report from minute 11.
Asus Prime X299 Edition 30 with WiFi 6 and Thunderbolt 3
The Asus Prime X299 Edition 30 is, however, not just an exhibition object, but a jubilee new edition that also makes it onto the market. Asus equips the motherboard with WiFi 6 support as well as two Thunderbolt 3 ports and corresponding DisplayPort connectors. Other features include two M.2 slots, 5G Ethernet from Aquantia and Intel Gigabit LAN. Meanwhile, two OLED displays are to provide an attractive appearance.
