Nvidia's mobile workstation GPUs are expected to be used in a number of so-called studio laptops.

Nvidia has announced new notebook graphics chipsets at Computex: the Quadro RTX 5000, RTX 4000 and RTX 3000 are the professional equivalent of the GeForce RTX 2080, RTX 2070 and RTX 2060 gaming GPUs; the Quadro T2000 and T1000 are tight with the GTX-16 series without RT and Tensor cores akin.

In keeping with the new GPUs, Nvidia has also come up with the marketing term "studio laptop": behind it are powerful 15- and 17-inch devices that, apart from an RTX GPU - whether GeForce or Quadro - have at least a six-core CPU in the ninth Core i generation, 16 GB of RAM, 512 GB of SSD storage space, and screens with unspecifically larger color spaces.

Studio laptops are, apart from the fresh name, nothing more than mobile workstation laptops. While the latter are traditionally more in the business environment, studio laptops should also appeal to savvy home buyers and independent creatives. The latter have tended to be more likely to use gaming notebooks in the past because they were still cheaper than business devices with remote maintenance and docking capabilities despite the high prices.

Studio laptops

Nvidia promises 17 studio laptops from all reputable manufacturers for the second half of the year. Some of them have already shown their interpretations: Acer stomps for creative users of the new product family ConceptD from the ground, Asus already revealed in January the StudioBook S with 16:10 screen. Smaller notebook manufacturers such as Gigabyte or MSI have their high-performance notebooks for a long time in several trim levels in the trade, some of which are with strong color screens aimed at (semi) professional users.

Dell has been selling the stylish XPS 15 for several generations in a Precision version with Quadro instead of GeForce GPU. In the future, even more powerful devices are to be expected here; The same applies to HP. And Razer has also sold its gaming notebooks in brightly colored special editions in the past; these will now become regular models as Blade 15 Studio Edition and Blade Pro 17 Studio Edition.

c't has already tested Flat 15.6-inch notebooks with GeForce RTX GPUs in the April 10 issue of 10/2019; many of the candidates are likely to go through in the future as a studio laptop.
