Dell XPS 15 9580 (2019): What we want

Dell should update XPS 15 shortly. The new model (assumed code: 9580) could solve the hassle of the webcam below as on XPS 13 9380 and use the same shrewdness to improve the heat disposal system. But if the 13-inch only needed an optimized one, his older brother needs a redesign to overcome the limitations of an idea that was born three years ago now.

Dell XPS 15

The current Dell XPS 15 is a difficult handset to recommend. It was already on the way out and is even more so now; on the one hand the competition has presented more modern machines (in all, from the internal design to the choice of key components such as the screen), on the other hand Dell software updates have introduced bugs penalizing the user experience.

For example, the one that throttles the 1050Ti GPU at just 48°C, first denied and then "corrected", or the one that gets stuck with Modern Standby, unstable when the laptop is closed and difficult to get around because of the S3 standby (the traditional one) disabled. Added to this is the BIOS downgrade block, some boredom with the touch screen after waking up, and other details absent at the output but a consequence of software patches.

There's more: the Dell XPS 15 9570 continues to have a high DPC latency (Deferred Procedure Call), more than desired by those who have to make audio production, continues to receive quality controls that make users of laptops deliver with the screen (for example) installed roughly, continues to suffer from coil whine on some specimens. Of course, this is not the norm; but there is so much online feedback that it suggests that it is not just bad luck.

Dell XPS 15 edition 2018 also has a structural defect in the positioning of the VRM (Voltage-regulator Module, the chip supervising the current delivered - the same discussed in the problems on MacBook Pro 15 Core i9), to the point of prompting more experienced users to add some thermal paste in that unfortunate "hot zone", halfway between the two fans.

For these reasons, the Dell XPS 15 9580 should be an all-new handset rather than an upgrade. The design needs to be upgraded with more Thunderbolt 3 ports to better support docks, monitors and eGPUs, and the screen needs to respond to competition from companies like Razer and Asus, where 144 Hz panels have been introduced. Even without becoming a gaming handset, you should offer an option of a higher refresh rate display - the same as you will hopefully get for the OLED variants shown a few days ago.

The hardware platform can follow the Intel and Nvidia releases of the moment, although a variant with AMD Ryzen Mobile's second generation, especially in the form of the 35-watt Ryzen 7 3750H, would give more choice to the end user without raising the list price. It remains to be seen when Dell will want to publish the first details. It is probable that there will be a lot of time left.
