Present on the MWC 2019, ZTE unveiled its new high-end smartphone, one of the first 5G stamped, the ZTE Axon 10 Pro 5G. We had the opportunity to take it in hand on the show.
So far, most 5G smartphones announced by the different manufacturers have in common, in addition to faster theoretical speeds, a larger template. Thus, the Samsung Galaxy S10 5G is thicker than its counterpart 4G, the Samsung Galaxy S10 Plus. That's when ZTE enters the dance with its Axon 10 Pro, the first 5G smartphone from the Chinese manufacturer that we have taken in hand.
In terms of design, the ZTE Axon 10 Pro 5G clearly suggests a mix between the new Xiaomi Mi 9 and a Samsung Galaxy S10. There is indeed a fine notch at the top of the screen, as on the Xiaomi smartphone, but with curved screen edges as we have seen on Samsung's smartphones or the Huawei Mate 20 Pro. Note also that the smartphone is particularly thin, especially for a 5G model, with 7.9 millimeters thick. It is very pleasant in hand and rather light. Moreover, the buttons fall rather easily under the thumb and the slightly rounded shape of the back or edges help the comfort of grip.
The design with a fine notch allows the smartphone to offer a very thin border at the top of the device, just as on the sides. Moreover, at the bottom of the display, the chin is also quite thin, in the vein of what we usually see on Android, even if it is not as fine as on an iPhone XS for example.
On the back of the smartphone, there is a photo module consisting of two main devices, slightly raised, and another module, flatter, with a lens and flash. Strangely, ZTE made the choice not to place the three objectives in the same area, but to distinguish two of them. This reminds a little the choice of Huawei with the P20 Pro. The Axon 10 Pro 5G is equipped with a 48-megapixel main unit backed by a telephoto lens and an ultra wide-angle lens.
Finally, on the right edge are the volume and power buttons, while the bottom edge houses the USB-C. It may however regret that the smartphone does not incorporate a headphone jack.
The ZTE Axon 10 Pro has a large Amoled display - which allows you to bend the edges slightly - by 6.47 inches. As we have seen previously, this display is almost edge to edge, with a thin chin on the bottom and a small notch shaped water drop at the top.
On the side of the definition, we are left with a Full HD + display of 2340 pixels by 1080, a ratio of 19.5: 9. We will appreciate the sharpness of the image. At first glance, the screen does not seem to draw too much towards cold colors, but it must be said that the lighting of the ZTE stand, as you can see in the photos, was particularly blue. Impossible at a glance to know what is the colorimetry of the screen in real conditions.
The screen also houses an optical fingerprint reader, but again, impossible to test on the model in demonstration.
The ZTE Axon 10 Pro 5G is already announced for a first half release in Europe and China. The price has not yet been announced. There are no offers for the moment.
Moreover, the smartphone is compatible with 5G, but without millimeter waves, it should not be particularly interesting for the French market where networks are expected for 2020. Until then, better smartphones, compatible with millimeter waves , should be available.
