A few days ago we echoed the possibility that Gigabyte would launch an M.2 unit with PCIe 4.0 interface. This unit is originally intended for the AMD Ryzen 3000 processors, which are supposed to be the only ones to offer PCIe 4.0 support. The presence of this unit could confirm the possible arrival of new Intel processors based on this interface. At the moment what is certain is that if we want to get the most out of it we will need an AMD Ryzen processor.
The Gigabyte SSD will be based on the Phison E16 controller. The memories used for this unit are Micron's 96-layer TLC NAND Flash. This unit thanks to the controller and the memories will be able to offer a reading speed of 4800MB/s and a writing speed of 4400MB/s. These units may reach 5000MB/s in future versions of the unit. Much better performance than Samsung 970 Pro units that offer 3500MB/s read and 2700MB/s write.
To get the most out of this Gigabyte unit, it would be absurd to mount it on a motherboard with Intel processors. Intel processors currently only offer PCIe 3.0, and if they introduced new processors, they would hardly support PCIe 4.0. What we don't currently know is how much these units will cost and in what capacities they will arrive.
About these units Gigabyte has said the following: "During the Computex, Gigabyte will release the world's first M.2 SSD with the PCI-Express 4.0 interface on the latest AMD platform to provide gamers and video editors with read/write speeds of up to 5000 MB/s at low temperatures".
