In 2013, we witnessed the acquisition of Waze by Google. Since then, the goal of the Mountain View firm seems clear: to integrate the functionalities of Waze with Maps.
We gradually saw the mapping and navigation application improve with features very similar to its cousin, Waze. Since January, the radar warning has arrived in the United Kingdom and the United States. Now, Google has activated it in many countries, especially in Europe, but not in France, we explain why.
As for Waze, the radars are not added to the map by Google, but not the users who can therefore report their presence. This will display an icon on the map where the radar is placed. The user can therefore adapt his speed to avoid being flashed. By offering this option in more countries, Google is trying to establish itself even more as an essential navigation application with this improvement.
However, this deployment is not to everyone's taste as it may encourage road users to drive above the speed limits and only slow down as these devices approach.
In 2012, after the advent of radar detectors such as Coyote, the French government decided to take action: the law prohibits any possession of this type of device.
The problem here is that this feature of Google Maps would make your smartphone a detector and you would be under threat of a 1,500 euro fine, a confiscation of the device, the suspension of the license for 3 years and the withdrawal of 6 points on it.
It would therefore be necessary once again to imitate Waze and transform the presence of radars on the application into a "Control Zone", this technique being not illegal unlike the other. We do not give the precise location of a radar, we submit the hypothesis that on a rather large area, there may be one.
Google should therefore probably implement a similar feature in the coming months in France, but for the moment nothing is available and it is therefore always necessary to go to Waze to benefit from a "Control Zone" alarm.
