The GoPro Hero 8 Black was announced on October 1, 2019. It complements the Hero 7 Black ergonomic design and exciting new features to further expand the range of possibilities! In this article, I present to you in detail all the technical differences between the Hero 7 and the Hero 8 Black.

GoPro Hero 8 Black VS Hero 7

GoPro Hero 8 Black VS Hero 7: size and weight

First, we look at the dimensions and weight of each camera. It is quickly noticed that the Hero 8 Black is thinner than the Hero 7 Black. However, it is higher and wider. This size difference disappears once the frame is installed on the Hero 7 Black. In fact, the Hero 8 Black no longer requires a frame to be fixed on any support! This revolutionary new system will then be presented at GoPro.

Concerning the weight of the cameras: advantage to the Hero 8 Black with only 126 grams in total. The absence of a frame once again makes the GoPro Hero 8 even more compact!

GoPro Hero 8 Black VS Hero 7: technical properties

Now let's take a look at the technical properties of the two GoPro cameras! Both models both incorporate a GP1 chip that provides high processing power. The Hero 8 Black stands out with a maximum video throughput of 100 Mbit per second when shooting in 4K! More details will be provided in the 4K videos from the GoPro Hero 8 Black.

Both cameras have a removable battery with a capacity of 1220 mAh. It can therefore be concluded that the two GoPros have relatively close autonomies. For example, you can film for nearly 90 minutes in 4K 30i/s! Similarly, both models feature a screen and a touch-zoom. The display is ideal for managing GoPro settings and menus!

As mentioned above, the Hero 8 Black does not need a frame to be installed on all GoPro media! On the other hand, the Hero 7 Black requires the use of a frame!

Protune is a set of advanced settings that allow you to adjust the rendering of your shots. It is available on both the Hero 7 and the Hero 8 Black. A new feature on the Gopro Hero 8 Black is the ability to film with a narrow angle of view. The latter recalls the angle of view on the HERO4 Black! Thus, with the new Hero 8, you can shoot with 4 different angles of view (SuperView, Wide, Linear and Narrow) against 3 for the Hero 7.

The ability to save presets directly to the GoPro and customizable screen shortcuts are two new features found exclusively on the GoPro Hero 8 Black! With these two options, you save valuable time!

GoPro Hero 8 Black VS Hero 7: general properties

Let's continue with the general properties of the two GoPro. Unlike the Hero 7, the Hero 8 Black can be complemented with media modules such as a high quality external microphone, a powerful LED lamp or an external display to provide video feedback to the camera! All these modules are perfectly suited for the creation of professional content such as vlogs!

As can be seen in the comparison table below, the Hero 7 and Hero 8 Black are both waterproof to 10 meters. Similarly, there is a diving box for each camera that is waterproof to 60 metres. Voice control, integrated GPS and RAW sound capture are common features on both GoPro.

Be careful, the Hero 8 Black requires the addition of the Media module to have an HDMI port. Similarly, this module allows you to connect an external microphone without the need to install a microphone adapter.

GoPro Hero 8 Black VS Hero 7: video mode

After having discussed the common points and differences of the Hero 7 and Hero 8 Black regarding their general properties, we can focus more specifically on the Video mode.

Both the Hero 8 Black and Hero 7 Black record videos in H.264 or H265 format to optimize storage space when shooting in 4K.  In addition, both GoPro are capable of capturing x8 full-HD (1080p) slow motion.

The Hero 8 video has some very interesting new features. For example, it includes the new HyperSmooth 2.0 image stabilization. New powerful algorithms allow you to adjust the stabilization according to 3 levels: "Enabled", "High" and "Boost".  The "High" level is actually equivalent to the HyperSmooth stabilization of the Hero 7 Black. Once the Boost is selected, the field of view is narrower but it allows you to generate videos with unparalleled stabilization. Even better, with the Hero 8, you can use HyperSmooth with all resolutions and frame rates!

LiveBurst is only available on the Hero 8. Thanks to it, the camera captures images 1.5 seconds before and after each video recording. Similarly, with the Hero 8, it is now possible to create night timelapse videos directly with the accelerated night video mode!

The other small improvement point of the Hero 8 Black compared to the Hero 7 Black is the choice of time intervals for the accelerated Video and TimeWarp modes. With the Hero 8, you can choose intervals of up to 60 minutes in the accelerated video mode. Similarly, with the Hero 8's TimeWarp 2.0 mode, the Auto interval appears! It is ideal for automatically adjusting the speed of your hyperlasp.

Last difference between the two cameras: the Hero 8 is able to film at 4K 60 frames per second with a Linear (or Large) angle of view!

GoPro Hero 8 Black VS Hero 7: photo mode

Now it's time to talk about the Photo mode! Whether with the Hero 7 or Hero 8 Black, you can capture 12 MP photos. Similarly, the Photo Self-timer is available on both models!

GoPro has decided to integrate new capture frequencies for the Rafale and Photo accelerated mode. For example, you can trigger bursts of 60 images in 10 or 6 seconds. The accelerated Photo intervals are extended to 60 minutes on the Hero 8 Black compared to only 60 seconds on the Hero 7 Black.

The Photo modes of both cameras are distinguished by the SuperPhoto feature. There is a version 2.0 with an improved HDR on the Hero 8 Black. Similarly, you can now capture RAW photos with all the Photo modes of the GoPro Hero 8 Black!
