According to the pictures, the Hero 8 would undergo an optical overhaul and be given the opportunity to include various accessory products. The photos show a GoPro camera with a front display, an LED video light or an additional microphone. With this GoPro would counter the double display function of the DJI Osmo Action.
Technical details of the alleged new GoPro camera are also published by photorumors.com. Accordingly, the Hero should use the further developed processor "GP2". With this, the Hero is supposed to create 8 video recordings in 4K resolution and with 120 frames per second - the latter would correspond to a doubling compared to the current Hero 7 Black. In Full-HD resolution, 480 frames per second should even be possible. This would allow extremely slowed down slow motion effects with sharp image display at the same time.
Will the GoPro Hero 8 be released in autumn 2019?
GoPro follows a proven performance cycle with its action cameras. The new top model is released every autumn: the Hero 7 in September 2018, the Hero 6 a year earlier and the Hero 5 in September 2016. If GoPro remains true to this rhythm, the Hero 8 will follow in September 2019.
This year GoPro is under special pressure. A few months ago Drohnen-Primus DJI presented his first own action camera. Quite a few voices described the DJI Osmo Action as a GoPro killer with a better equipment: On the credit side there are displays on both camera sides and a more valuable housing.
For the Hero 8 it is obvious that GoPro observes the features of the competition. The double display of the DJI competition on the front and back would clearly enhance the functionality and make selfie lovers happy.
It also seems likely that GoPro will eliminate publicly criticized vulnerabilities of the Hero 7. This includes a modified housing that is more robust against external influences.
When it comes to image resolution, there is little need for action. With 4k resolution, the current Hero 7 is already on the cutting edge. For 8k it might still be too early, suitable televisions are still far away. A further increase in the number of frames per second is more likely. This promises even softer slow motion.
We also assume an update for the GP1 processor. For example, a better image analysis is conceivable, which on the one hand lets the already good image stabilizer work even more powerfully, but on the other hand supports the film production even more actively. Already today the cameras automatically select the most exciting moments and use them for the automatic film creation in the GoPro app.
Improved recognition would promise better films and this in turn is one of the major differentiators from the competition. Nobody today wants to see more minute-long, boring shots from the ego perspective, but a short and crisp summary in a short time. And in the best case, the creator wants to receive and share such a film with only a few minutes of effort.
As far as the price is concerned, we assume that GoPro will remain true to its usual strategy. The Hero 8 will replace the Hero 7 and come onto the market at a similar price, less than 500 euros.
