The confrontation between the US government and Chinese companies, which have been crystallized by Huawei, which has become the model, has seen a huge upsurge this weekend. Huawei is now officially banned from any interaction with US companies, including Google.
Also, Huawei and Honor have lost their Android license and will no longer be able to use the Play and Play Store services on their next smartphones. Fortunately, smartphones already released will continue to benefit from security updates. But what about the future?
The manufacturer's official communication on the subject states it: Huawei without Google but still under Android, it is quite possible, and this thanks to the AOSP which is not included in the ban. This means that in the future we could benefit from an alternative OS based on Android AOSP, but which would not have integrated Google services.
Does that necessarily mean that it will be impossible for us as consumers to benefit from it? Absolutely not. Since time immemorial, this possibility has been provided through the so-called "GApps".
GApps is a package created by the developers of the custom ROM scene to allow easy installation of all the Google services that we are used to as European users. Before Xiaomi's arrival in France, this was the main way to find these services on smartphones produced by the Chinese company.
Problem being that to be able to install them, you must be able to install a Recovery sufficient to install them. And to do that, you have to unlock your bootloader.
However, Huawei has closed the bootloader unlock on its smartphones since 2018. If the situation with the US government does not change and the deployment of its own OS is eventually on the agenda, it is hoped that the Chinese manufacturer will give users this opportunity again.
With it, finding Google services would not be very complicated, and users could easily offset the losses of this political event. While the legal conditions for such an action remain difficult to determine, they offer hope for the future.
