Huawei Honor V20 vs. Huawei Nova 4: full screen displays, no notch and 48MP cameras

ByGB Blog Official 2018-12-29 3633

We are breaking the tradition of comparing notch display smartphones and starting a new one — behold the punch hole screen. The Huawei Honor V20 and the Huawei Nova 4, released on December 26th and December 17th respectively, are the company’s first smartphones to feature punch hole display designs — both phones sport impressive screen-to-body ratios and have opted for a punch-hole solution for the selfie camera instead of the massively hated notches, moving parts or teardrop compromises.

Huawei Honor V20 vs. Huawei Nova 4: new designs and new displays

The two smartphones come with identical displays: 6.4 inch 1080 x 2310p (Full HD+), IPS LCD screens. And both phones sport some of the highest screen-to-body ratios on the market — over 91%.

On top of that, the Huawei Honor V20 has one of the most striking back panels we’ve even seen on a Huawei phone — scratch that — on any phone. The phone does not only come with a gradient colored back cover, there is also a V imprinted on the back panel that will change color and position depending on the angle you are looking at it from. The Huawei Nova 4 also sports a bright gradient back panel but there are no “over the top” effects.

The key thing that both phones have in common is the above mentioned punch hole in the corner of the screen that houses the phone’s selfie cam. This is the latest trick (also featured on the Samsung Galaxy A8s) used to offer the most sought-after smartphone properties of 2018:

full screen experience and high screen-to-body ratio. This is an interesting solution to the “age-old” question of creating an all-screen phone — and a nice alternative to notch designs as well as sliding camera setups, which are not everyone’s cup of tea.

Huawei Honor V20 vs. Huawei Nova 4: hardware, software and connectivity

The Huawei Honor V20 comes with a stronger processor of the two phones sporting the new Kirin 980 compared to the Kirin 970 on the Nova 4. Both phones come with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage — but with the V20, you also get the cheaper 6GB option. The Honor 4 also offers a less expensive version — but in this case, you get a different rear cam setup on the cheaper model.

Both smartphones run on Huawei’s EMUI operating system based on Android 9 Pie.

The battery on the Honor V20 is 4000mAh and the phone supports 22.5W fast charging. The Nova 4 sports a slightly smaller battery — 3750 mAh — and supports 18W fast charging. Unfortunately, there is not mention of wireless charging support for either of the models, which would definitely be a convenient feature to have onboard.

When it comes to connectivity, both smartphones support Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, GPS and Bluetooth. The only difference here is that the V20 uses the later Bluetooth 5.0 version compared to Bluetooth 4.2 on the Nova 4. Both phones support 4G/LTE and have two nano SIM card slots letting you enjoy two accounts on one device.

Huawei Honor V20 vs. Huawei Nova 4: 48MP rear cameras and 25MP selfie shooters

The Huawei Nova 4 is the first smartphone we know to feature a triple 48MP rear camera. The camera uses a Sony's recently made 48MP sensor alongside a 16MP wide-angle lens and a 2MP depth sensor.

The Huawei Honor V20 is also a 48MP camera phone — but, instead of three cameras, it features a dual camera setup with a TOF ( time-of-flight camera) 3D camera in addition to the main sensor. Both smartphones have a 25MP selfie shooter hidden inside the circular cut-out.

Both phones’ cameras are enhanced with additional features like AI photography, night scenes, portrait, time-lapse photography, slow-motion videos and others. On paper, the Honor 4 comes off as the stronger camera option of the two — but the V20’s secondary 3D sensor also stores a lot of potential: among other things, it enables the smartphone to create 3D avatars.

Huawei Honor V20 vs. Huawei Nova 4: the verdict

The Nova 4 will cost you about $490 — but there is also a less expensive $450 version that uses a 20MP main sensor for the rear camera instead of the 48MP one. The Honor V20’s starting price is set at about $530, which is not significantly more — but you do get a stronger processor, a bigger battery and a truly striking design. The Nova 4, on the other hand, is one of Huawei’s best camera phones and comes with a modern yet slightly more subtle design.

On the front, the two phones look almost identical — and you do get the benefits of a full screen experience and you won’t be distracted by a notch at the top of the screen.
