Huawei Honor Watch Magic smartwatch: smaller, slimmer and sleeker

The Watch Magic looks very similar to the Watch GT – but, of course, there are quite a few key differences. First, you get a slightly smaller 1.2 inch display with 390 x 390 PPI 326 resolution. The watch comes in a 316L stainless steel and a plastic 42mm case. The watch is only 9.8mm thick, which makes it much slimmer than the GT and also more convenient to wear under sleeves and with various clothing styles compared to the chunkier GT.

The Magic smartwatch measures 1.69 x 1.69 x 0.39 inches and weighs 32.5 grams. A notable highlight of the model is the 5 ATM water resistance.

Style-wise, the watch works with quick fit quick release straps, so you will get the exciting option of experimenting with styles. The watch body itself is available in lava black and moonlight silver.

Huawei Honor Watch Magic smartwatch: advanced fitness tracking and NFC payments

Despite the fact that the Magic smartwatch is meant to be as the more budget version of the Huawei Watch GT, the company has not skimped out on the features for the smaller watch.

Huawei TruSeen 3.0 heart rate monitor

According to Huawei, the new heart rate monitoring technology provides a more efficient real time tracking thanks to the upgraded sensors and a self-learning mechanism. This makes the smartwatch a very useful fitness tracking tool and the built-in heart rate sensor places it on the higher end of fitness trackers.

Multiple sports modes

On top of the fancy heart rate sensor, the watch comes with several dedicated sports modes to help you evaluate progress in specific disciplines. You will be able to get personalized results for running, cycling, climbing, swimming and more. Additionally, there is something called the Clever Scientific Coaching offering real time guidance during your jog with time-movement feedback.

Intelligent sleep statistics

Most sports oriented smartwatches come with sleep monitors — that's definitely not a new concept. However, the Honor watch Magic takes the tracker a step further with a sleep monitoring program developed in collaboration with Harvard Medical School. The watch's dedicated sleep monitor, Huawei TruSleep 2.0, is capable of identifying common sleep issues and provide suggestions for their resolution aiming to give you a fulfilling rest.

NFC payments

You will be able to use the watch for wireless payments thanks to the built-in NFC chip. Those planning to use the watch in China are in even more luck: you will be able to make full use of Huawei Pay and AliPay and even pay for transportation like buses and subway with just your phone.

3 satellite positioning system

The watch comes with advanced location tracking supporting GPS, GLONASS and GALILEO.

Bluetooth 4.2

As with most smartwatches, more functionality becomes available through a Bluetooth connection: the watch can be your camera trigger, find your phone, let you know about incoming calls and messages and more.

5 ATM IP rating

The Honor Magic smartwatch is not just water resistant. With 5 ATM protection, it can actually survive a submersion to the depth of up to 130 feet, which makes it suitable for both swimmers and divers.

swimming for the depth of up to 130 feet

Overall, the Honor Magic smartwatch does not fall far behind Huawei's GT when it comes to performance and fitness tracking. However, there are few things that set the watch a bit back.

First, there is the rather small 178mAh battery (for comparison, the Watch GT comes with a 420mAh battery) – the price to pay for the Magic smartwatch's slimmer design. With that, the Honor's Lite OS and the energy-efficient dual chip help to make the most of it offering about a week of battery life with intensive use. Another disappointing aspect is definitely that some features like AliPay or transportation cards are only limited to China. Whether the watch will eventually support other payment systems is still an open question.

Huawei Honor Watch Magic smartwatch: price and verdict

Branding itself as the more affordable version of the Honor GT, the Honor Watch Magic smartwatch comes at $157.99. Having looked at quite a few smart and sports watches released this year, we think that the Honor Magic is a very strong contender when it comes to both performance and price. The watch would be a good fit as both a fitness tracking tool or an everyday smart accessory thanks to its feature portfolio and trendy watch straps.
