Huawei Mate 20 vs. Huawei Mate 20 Pro: the looks

The first obvious difference between the two phones are the screens. The Huawei Mate 20 sports a flat screen with almost zero bezel below and a small 'teardrop' notch at the top. The  Mate 20 Pro, on the other hand, comes with a more curved display, a larger bottom bezel and quite a substantial elongated notch. Both smartphones feature a glass back in a metal frame. On the back, there are camera units with flash.

The fingerprint scanner on the Huawei Mate 20 is located right under the camera. The Mate 20 Pro, though, follows the popular high-end trend of having the fingerprint scanner built right into the screen.

Size-wise, the two phones are very close with the Mate 20 Pro being measuring 6.21 x 2.84 x 0.3 inches compared to the 6.22 x 3.03 x 0.32 inches on the Mate 20. Both handsets will be available in a nice range of colors: Emerald Green, Midnight Blue, Twilight, Pink Gold and Black.

Huawei Mate 20 vs. Huawei Mate 20 Pro: display

The Huawei Mate 20 sports a 6.53-inch RGBW display with the resolution of 1080 x 2244. The Huawei Mate 20 Pro counters that with a slightly smaller-sized OLED screen of 6.39-inches and a higher resolution of 1440 x 3120.

The screens on both phones support HDR but there is a difference in aspect ratio: 18.7:9 on the Mate 20 and 19.5:9 on the Mate 20 Pro.

When it comes to viewing quality itself, you will surely get a better experience with the Mate 20 Pro with clearer and crisper imagery. However, the long notch at the top can be an unwelcome distraction for some, who will, in turn, appreciate the minimal interference on the display real estate with the Mate 20's tiny notch.

Huawei Mate 20 vs. Huawei Mate 20 Pro: under the hood

A look under the hood does not reveal many differences. You get the octa-core Kirin 980 chipset on both smartphones speeding up to the maximum of 2.6Ghz. The CPUs work hand in hand with the Mali-G76 GPU and dual neural processing units (NPUs).

Memory and storage do not add to our differences pile either. The Huawei Mate 20 Pro comes with 6GB of RAM  – and you get this option on the Huawei Mate 20 as well. Plus, you also get the 'simpler' version with  4GB. On the storage side, you get the same 128GB on both phones as well as the ability to expand that with up to 256GB on the nano SD card slot.

Thus, both the Huawei Mate 20 and the Huawei Mate 20 Pro perfectly geared for multitasking and storing large media files. The phones run on Android 9 Pie overlaid with Huawei's EMUI 9 interface on top.

Huawei Mate 20 vs. Huawei Mate 20 Pro: the camera game

The notable thing about both devices is that they come with the triple Leica lens setup on the back – and this, just by itself, is already looking pretty good. On the specs side, the Huawei Mate 20 Pro features a better offer of 20MP f/2.2 ultra-wide-angle lens, a 40MP f/1.8 wide-angle lens and an 8MP f/2.4 telephoto lens – further enhanced with optical image stabilisation and 3x optical zoom support.

The Huawei Mate 20's cameras a more modest with a 16MP f/2.2 ultra-wide-angle lens, a 12MP f/1.8 wide-angle lens and an 8MP f/2.4 telephoto lens. You will also be able to experience all the benefits of optical image stabilisation and enjoy the 2x optical zoom option.

There is no difference in the selfie department: both phones sport a 24MP f/2.0 camera.

Enhanced with multiple AI capabilities, both phones do what Huawei phones do best: take great photos. Thanks to triple lens setup, your phone camera will be able to bring out better detail in close ups, take crisp images in the distance as well as work really well with landscape and macro shots thanks to the ultra-wide-angle lens. Night time photography is also made easier and blurr-less thanks to high-end image stabilisation and the camera's ability to balance out high contrast scenes. So, even if you take handheld photos or record videos without a tripod, both new Huawei phones promise to bring noise to the minimum.

Speaking of videos, the phones also offer quite a few in-house video editing options with new features like Cinema Mode (21:9 movie ratio) and Director's Cut (separate highlight videos for each person in your photos thanks to AI facial recognition software).

Both Huawei phones promise better than average battery life with the Huawei Mate 20 sporting a 4,000mAh battery and the Huawei Mate 20 Pro pumping that further up to 4,200mAh. In addition to having a larger battery, the Mate 20 Pro also supports 40W Huawei SuperCharge (compared to the Mate 20 supporting 22.5W).

Huawei Mate 20 vs. Huawei Mate 20 Pro: the verdict

While both phones are definitely in the flagship category, we were expecting more operation differences from the Pro version. While most  of  the existing differences between the  two devices seem to work in the favor of the Huawei Mate 20 Pro (higher screen resolution, better cameras, larger battery, etc.), the Huawei Mate 20 fights back with its larger bezel-less screen,  a tiny notch and the same processing power. Plus, we can expect the Mate 20 to be cheaper than the Pro version.
