Samsung made official its Samsung Galaxy Fold recently, a phone that has an external screen but when deployed we offers another twice as big. It also has the "merit " of being the most expensive phone in history since 1996. Another manufacturer that seems to bet on this trend is Xiaomi, which a month ago taught us in video and running its prototype with a screen that is folded in the form of a triptych. Now it's the turn of Huawei, and its product seems the most promising to date.
Unlike the Galaxy Fold that has two screens, in this Huawei Mate X we see a single screen. The idea is the same: a phone "normal " when folded and a kind of tablet when deployed and have a larger screen. To get this with a single screen, the Huawei Mate X is folded out, therefore when folded both the front and back are screen. This of course means more fragility and possible damage to the "all screen ".
The idea is that the phone is usually used with the screen folded, so that it looks like a normal phone. In this state the back is turned off (half the screen is turned off) and only the front part is switched on and functional. When it is automatically displayed, the whole screen is turned on and the interface is adapted to take advantage of the entire display. We will have to see how the software adapts to these screens, in principle should be an Android for tablets.
As we can see in the images, there is no notch and there are hardly any frames. Where's the camera then? The design of the Huawei Mate X is somewhat peculiar, as one side is much thicker than the rest of the phone (so that the same thickness as the entire device is folded). On this side is where we see the main buttons of the mobile and also the back cameras and flash among other things. This is where we also find the fingerprint sensor of the Huawei Mate X.
Falcon Wing is the name that receives this new folding mobile design that has created Huawei. The company has commented that they have been working on this new design for three years. The crucial part we have in the system to fold the screen. Generally a hole is usually created as it is physically impossible to bend a flat surface without forcing the inner space. To avoid this Huawei has created a system that does not leave interior space and get the two parts to join minimizing the thickness.
The folding mobiles are an extra effort for the processors, the graphics and the RAM of the devices, ultimately it involves moving almost twice as much pixels as before. For this Huawei has placed its processor Kirin 980 of 7 nanometers within the Huawei Mate X. Next to the main processor we have the Balong 5000, the company modem manufactured to work with 5G networks, because indeed, the Huawei Mate X is compatible with the new Connectivity. Another detail to highlight in the section of the connectivity is that the Huawei Mate X has Dual SIM support. The second nano SIM slot can also be used to add a NM Card, Huawei's own external storage system.
The screen that mounts the Huawei Mate X has an 8 inch size when deployed, with a resolution of 2,480 X 2,200 px. This is a flexible OLED panel and when folded we have two screens. The main or front has 6.6 inches with 2,480 x 1,148 px of resolution, the secondary or rear has 6.38 inches with resolution of 2,480 x 892 px.
The camera system we found is triple, something that inherits from other brand models like the Huawei Mate 20 Pro for example. What are not clear are the specifications of these cameras, perhaps they are the same as in the Huawei Mate 20 Pro, but for now has not been confirmed.
Other notable features are the battery and its fast charge, it has a double battery (because bending a battery is not as easy as a screen) of 4,500 mAh. But the interesting thing here is the fast charge you have. The Huawei Mate X has a fast load of 55W, this means for example charge to 85% in 30 minutes.
The Huawei Mate X arrives in a single version of 8GB of RAM and 512 GB of storage. Its color is also unique, the interstellar Blue, although they hope to introduce new colors. It will be available in the mid-2019 as indicated by the company.
As for its price, it reaches the market for 2,299 euros, a high price, very high. As the brand has warned, you have to take into account all the technology in this new phone. Usually happens with the first generations of new products, we will see if it is reduced over time.
