The Huawei P30 Lite is at least visually similar to the P30 Pro and P30. With a screen size of 6.15 inches, it will be one of the more compact smartphones in 2019. Also the dimensions of 152.9 x 72.7 x 7.4 mm are pleasantly compact thanks to the small edges around the display. With a weight of 159g, it is also quite light and fits well in your pocket. In addition, Huawei has also emphasized the aesthetics of the P30 Lite. Depending on the light, the back reflects in different colors, which looks damn cool and provides the necessary premium look. Of course, this effect is stronger in the blue version than in the white or black version.
At second glance, however, there are differences to the P30 Pro and P30 in terms of the materials used. The frame is made of plastic and the back of glass, while the P30 Pro metal is used in the frame.
But the other elements of the smartphone do not otherwise hold any nasty surprises. Everything is well made and there are no annoying gaps or inaccuracies. The fingerprint sensor on the back unlocks the smartphone in less than a second from standby and allows almost no errors. In daily use it is faster, more accurate and therefore more comfortable than the sensors under the display. Otherwise there is also face-unlock via the front camera. Although this offers less security, works well enough with enough light. Finally, there is another one above the display
Notification LED and in the SIM slot fit two Nano-SIMs or a SIM and a Micro-SD for memory expansion. Overall, the Huawei P30 Lite is a well-made and handsome smartphone. The fingerprint sensor on the back is even better in daily use than the P30 and P30 Pro in-display fingerprint.
The display of the Huawei P30 Lite measures 6.15 inches and has a resolution of 2312 x 1080 pixels (Full HD). In order to offer as much space as possible for content, a waterdrop notch for the front camera was integrated in the upper area. The resolution brings it to a pixel density of 415ppi, which no longer individual pixels are visible.
The display works the Huawei P30 Lite works with IPS technology and not with AMOLED (= OLED) technology. The advantage of AMOLED panels is the low energy consumption and the infinite contrast. Black really does appear deep black and not slightly greyish as with IPS panels, because corresponding pixels are not illuminated. This one must do without the Huawei P30 Lite, which can be criticized in view of the price quite. Almost all competitors in the price range (with the exception, of course, Apple) have already installed AMOLED panels, for example, the Xiaomi Mi 9 SE, Samsung Galaxy A50 or Samsung Galaxy A70.
However, the Huawei P30 Lite does not have a bad picture quality by a long shot. The color representation is pleasantly natural and the display is very stable in viewing angle. The brightness is slightly lower around the notch, and if you look closely you will see a dark border. This is not really bad, but it should be mentioned for the sake of completeness. The maximum brightness of 480cd / m2 is not bad, but in direct sunlight, the display reflects unfortunately very strong.
In the display settings you have the opportunity to adjust the color reproduction continuously. Also, a time-automatable read mode can be activated and even the resolution can be reduced to improve the battery life. There is no such thing as an ever-on feature like the Samsung or Xiaomi competitors, but the P30 Lite has a notification LED on it. The touchscreen registers up to 10 points of contact simultaneously and works very fast and accurately. The display glass is protected against scratches.
Overall, the display of the Huawei P30 Lite is good for living. The panel is bright and stable. In view of the high price you get here but much less command than the competition, because you have to renounce AMOLED technology and a strong luminosity.
Also in terms of performance, the P30 Lite has a fairly thick smear compared to the P30 or P30 Pro. Instead of the in-house top model Kirin 980, the middle-class chip Kirin 710 is used. The same CPU is used, for example, in the 200 € Honor 8X of the subsidiary brand. The CPU supports 4 Cortex-A73 cores with a clock speed of 2.2 GHz in the power cluster through four Cortex-A53 cores with lower power and a clock of 1.7 GHz. The processor is manufactured in the 12nm manufacturing process and therefore does not work nearly as energy efficient as the Kirin 980 in the 7nm manufacturing process. Graphics performance is provided by an ARM Mali G51 graphics processor.
A benchmark comparison with other smartphones shows how weak-tempered the Huawei P30 Lite is in comparison. Xiaomi already offers a better performance with the € 200 Redmi Note 7. A comparison with the Xiaomi Mi 9 SE for € 300 or the Mi 9 for € 450 should not even better. Even the not particularly high-priced models of Samsung (Galaxy A50 & Galaxy A70) offer in comparison a better performance than the Huawei P30 Lite.
The Huawei P30 Lite runs on Android 9 and the EMUI user interface V9 on top. So you do not have to worry about a possible update to the latest version of Android, even though the Android base does not really matter in such a heavily modified interface as EMUI.
As far as the EMUI surface is concerned, you can only love or hate them (like almost all surfaces). Personally, I have to confess that I've loved EMUI in recent years and now rank it among the top three surfaces besides MIUI and OxygenOS. Huawei extends Android in numerous ways with its own layout and a variety of additional functions. The system is suitable for both smartphone beginners and advanced users. The user has numerous settings options, without the surface would seem overloaded. As for the selection of preinstalled third-party software, Huawei has also held back on the P30 Lite.
The Huawei P30 Lite has three cameras on the back. The Triple-Cam Setup includes the following lenses:
48 MP (wide-angle lens, f / 1.8 aperture)
8 MP (ultra wide-angle lens)
2 MP (Bokeh lens / depth sensor)
Somewhat puzzled, probably one or the other noticed that the main camera of the P30 Lite has even more megapixels, than that of the Huawei P30 (Pro). As always, however, it should be mentioned here that the number of megapixels does not necessarily lead to a good image quality. Our test shows: Unfortunately this is also the case with the Huawei P30 Lite, at least if you measure the mobile phone at its retail price. The photos in daylight on the phone display still look good, but as soon as you zoom in something, makes a lack of details noticeable. Also, the photos could be a little stronger color. The P30 Lite tends occasionally to a slight gray haze and produces some sad shots. However, this effect can be countered with the AI ??mode something. Overall, photos in daylight are usable, but not more.
The Huawei P30 Lite is a dual SIM smartphone. Two Nano-SIM cards can be operated simultaneously in the mobile phone. Alternatively, you have the option to use a slot for memory expansion via Micro-SD. As for the supported network frequencies, you naturally get full LTE reception in Germany (B1 / B3 / B4 / B7 / B8 / B20 / B38). The reception is average.
Bluetooth will support the Huawei P30 Lite only with the old 4.2 standard, which is hardly to be found in this price range. In practice you can live well with it, but we would have preferred Bluetooth 5.0 already. After all, there are current codecs such as aptX and aptXHD. When Wifi you get with dual-band .ac standard with 2 × 2 MIMO. The quality of the phone is neat. The handsfree function can also be used without any problems. The internal mono speaker ensures a sufficiently loud and differentiated sound. We definitely welcome the combination of USB C connection and 3.5mm headphones. On sensors, the Huawei Pro 30 Lite includes: Fingerprint, Proximity, Brightness, Acceleration, Compass, FM Radio, Gyroscope, Reverb, and NFC. With the exception of an infrared transmitter, you get a complete equipment here. Positioning via GPS, GLONASS, a-GPS and Beidu also works perfectly well for about 5 meters.
