After the preview, which anticipated some potential of the new chips, Intel officially launched the first tenth-generation Intel Core processors (Ice Lake) for notebooks, convertibles and low-power Mini PCs, as well as the first 10-nanometer products (although the PCH - Platform Controller Hub - remained at 14 nm) and the first with Intel Gen11 graphics which should guarantee almost double the performance compared to Gen10.
The new processors offer OEM partners the freedom to innovate in design and aesthetics, reducing the space dedicated to hardware components while continuing to guarantee the highest standards, as well as cutting-edge performance. The tenth generation Intel Core is already in the supply phase with the availability of OEM systems expected by the end of the year, probably December.
Intel Ice Lake processors are based on the new "Sunny Cove" architecture and carry large-scale artificial intelligence in PCs with Intel Deep Learning Boost technology (Intel DL Boost), for an increase in performance up to 2.5% in AI capabilities . This new graphic architecture offers up to a vector calculation teraflop for the heavy workloads of inference, to optimize creativity, productivity and entertainment in extremely portable thin and light notebooks. Intel Gaussian Network Accelerator (GNA) is integrated into the SoC for low-power artificial intelligence uses on PC.
The chips also feature built-in support for Thunderbolt 3 and WiFi 6, but that doesn't mean that all devices with an Ice Lake processor will be equipped with these technologies, since they will use additional components (WiFi module 6, Thunderbolt 3 controller and more ) and notebook manufacturers will decide what to integrate.
It is interesting to note that Santa Clara does not dwell much on the advantages of the transition from 14 nanometers to 10 nanometers, but only hints at a small increase in single-core performance compared to an eighth-generation Whiskey Lake processor, as well as a small improvement in instructions per cycle (IPC). Instead, the performance should be improved a lot for gaming, at least for devices with the most powerful Intel Iris Plus graphics that will be offered on some models instead of the Intel UHD Gen11. Intel emphasizes nearly doubled performance for videographic experiences, HEVC encoding about 2 times more efficient for content creation even on the move, 4K HDR video playback with a billion colors and gaming with almost 2x FPS number and 1080p titles.
The tenth generation Intel Core processors range from Intel Core i3 versions to Intel Core i7 (11 in total), with up to 4 cores and 8 threads, up to 4.1 GHz maximum Turbo frequency and up to 1.1 GHz frequency graphics. Great absent - at least for now - Intel Core m3. The U-Series has a TDP of 15W or 28W, while the Y-Series of 9W, with a wide freedom of the producers that will be able to vary (increase / decrease it) the processor's TDP depending on the destination system. There are some differences between the U-Series and Y-Series chips, in addition to the TDP: the 15-watt models will support the DDR4-3200 or LPDDR4 / x 3733 RAM, for example, while the 9W ones will only support the latter . And since Intel has not released any other information, we can offer you a little taste of the specifications of the new chips recovered from a Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 document:
Intel Core i3-1005 G1 (8MB cache, up to 3.4 GHz)
Intel Core i5-1035 G1 (6MB cache, up to 3.7 GHz)
Intel Core i7-1065 G7 (4MB cache, up to 3.9 GHz)
With Intel HD Gen11 graphics and support for up to 64 EU, Ice Lake chips can encode and decode 8K 10bit video at 30 fps (HEVC / VP9) or two 4K @ 60fps screens. They also support OpenGL 4.5, DirectX 12 and OpenCL 2.2. In essence, according to Intel, its integrated graphics is the same as the AMD Radeon Vega 10 of the higher-end Ryzen Mobile.
