We still don't have quantitative data on Comet Lake CPUs and much less on Ice Lake, not at least in high-performance processors, when we already have with us the first data on the latest from Intel, which should arrive by the end of next year under the company's 10 nm+.
We already talked about the first details of the architecture, where we revealed that it will have a higher consumption than what was seen in Whiskey Lake and that in principle it will arrive for the series "U" and "Y", where it seems Intel already has operational samples as Engineering Sample. Everything suggests that one of these CPUs is the one shown today, where the data is not enlightening for the most part.
We are talking about a CPU with two cores without HT that currently runs at a speed of 1.8 GHz in Boost and a base frequency of 1.5 GHz, data unimpressive, but quite accurate if we approach from the point of view of ULV for equipment such as Chromebooks or Ultrabooks. In the same way, the most surprising thing is undoubtedly its cache system, something that we already know will be modified for Ice Lake and that will have a second revision (less deep) for Tiger Lake.
It surprises for the inclusion of 2 X 256 KB of L2, that is to say, 512 KB for a CPU of two cores without HT, where in addition it will carry 2 MB of L3, something already common. This change may be encouraged by the new Willow Cove kernel architecture and the inclusion of a revision for its iGPU, as we would go from Gen 11 to Gen 12 and from 64 EU to 96 EU.
The performance data is not at all impressive, on the contrary, they are very modest, somewhat predictable seeing their characteristics. The platform even uses DDR4 SODIMM, so in this aspect does not invite to push the performance.
In any case, it has achieved in multimedia 57.17 Mpix/s, in arithmetic 5.28 GPS, in high security cryptography 2.02 GB/s, in bandwidth with DDR4 2133 MHz only 8.11 GB/s and in high precision financial and scientific analysis 4.18 kOPTS and 7.55 GLOFPS.
These data cannot be compared at the moment, as there are no records of platforms such as Whiskey Lake with similar characteristics. Since it is an ES CPU and there is still so much left for its final development, we hope that Intel will finally give a big push to performance, because what SiSoftware shows today are not only bad figures, but is even worrying. We will see what new future leaks will bring us.
