Intel's 10-nm Ice Lake-U processor launches at Computex 2019

The new mobile processors have a strong GPU, HDMI 2.0, AVX-512, Thunderbolt 3 and Wi-Fi 6, but clock slightly lower.

For the Computex computer show in Taipei, Intel will introduce the long-delayed, tenth-generation Core i processors for flat notebooks. Intel manufactures these 10-nanometer "Ice Lake U" processors; There are variants with 9, 15 or 28 Watt Thermal Design Power (TDP). First of all, only quad-cores are mentioned.

The Turbo clock is to reach a maximum of 4.1 GHz, while the current Whiskey Lake U with 14 nm structures as the Core i7-8665U brings up to 4.8 GHz: The newcomers so clocked at least in the turbo lower. However, Intel promises an average of 18 percent more computing power per clock step for the new "Sunny Cove" cores from Ice Lake. And with software that uses the AVX-512 instruction set extension or the new "DL Boost" commands for AI algorithms, Ice Lake-U can calculate even faster. However, such apps are rare.

Stronger graphics

Above all, Ice Lake-U should bring much more 3D performance and higher display resolutions: The built-in 11th generation graphics processor (Gen11) has more Execution Units (EUs) than its "UHD Graphics" predecessors on the one hand and improved video output on the other. Decoder and DisplayPort 1.4 and HDMI 2.0 for 4K and 5K displays as well as 8K videos. The GPU can also change the refresh rate via VESA Adaptive Sync.

Intel promises that many games will run smoothly in Full HD resolution. However, the associated benchmarks were made with very fast LPDDR4-3733 memory and in some games, the display quality was lowered.

More functions

Intel also increases its functionality with Ice Lake-U: For Thunderbolt-3 aka USB 4, only a few additional components are needed. The fast interface is likely to continue to spread. Intel has already integrated WLAN controllers in older CPU generations (integrated connectivity, CNVi), but now some come with Wi-Fi 6 GIG + (IEEE 802.11ax) for up to 1680 MBit / s.

The Ice Lake U processors consist of two dies on one Die Carrier, ie CPU and "chipset" (Platform Controller Hub, PCH). The latter now also assumes the functions of a Platform Management IC (PMIC), thus controlling the power supply. This allows even flatter notebooks.

New notebooks

The exact launch date of Ice Lake-U is not yet clear - but the PC manufacturers have so synonymous once equipped notebooks with it, before you can buy the new processors. Concrete product announcements are expected at Computex.

Other 14nm processors

The 10 nm processors have not completely replaced the 14 nm technology. Intel is expected to continue to introduce new 14nm CPUs, including a Comet Lake-H with up to 10 cores for gaming notebooks and mobile workstations. But it is probably Comet Lake -U planned, which could accommodate six cores in 15 watts TDP. It is unclear whether even these newcomers dominate AVX-512; argues that Comet Lake should allegedly process BFloat16 commands, which in their turn belong to the AVX-512 sphere.
