The mobile Safari version has been quite nice so far, but basically there were too many limitations. This is changing with the new operating systems. Especially on the iPad, users can enjoy a desktop-level browser. Apple allows for the first time that all websites can be accessed directly in your desktop version and has optimized the operation for well-known web apps like Google Docs, Wordpress and others. In addition, you can now also download files from the Internet. The new download manager gives you the necessary overview. You also decide whether files should only be backed up locally or in a cloud storage.
Safari already showed the possibility that the iPad can display two windows of an app next to each other. With iPadOS, Apple extends this to all apps, allowing you to open two Pages documents, two notes, or two emails side by side. App-Exposé also comes from the Mac to the iPad and shows you all the windows of an app with a single wipe.
You'll also get new gestures in documents to quickly copy and paste content. If you pull three fingers together, a marked passage will be copied. If you then tap another location and open the three fingers, the content is inserted there. In addition, there are numerous new shortcuts for keyboards.
With iPadOS 13, the potential of the file app is further expanded. While you were only able to access the local storage, iCloud Drive and Cloud services at startup, Apple is significantly expanding the possibilities with the update. After the update, you can access SMB file servers, USB sticks and SD cards and transfer data to the iPad - even directly into apps like Lightroom if you want. This makes the iPad a powerful companion and computer replacement. The new app also allows the creation and unpacking of ZIP files.
After dark mode, Sidecar is probably the most interesting feature of iPadOS 13. Together with macOS Catalina, Apple introduces the ability to expand or mirror your Mac desktop to an iPad - wireless and wired. This also brings many advantages into play. Now all iPad users can simulate a touch bar that was previously only available on new MacBook Pro models. The Apple Pencil can also be used for drawing, marking and as an input device.
The Apple Pencil gets better right on the iPad. If you move the cursor from a display corner into the image, a new file or a screenshot is automatically created, which you can add comments to and send. According to Apple, this should be possible in almost all applications. A new tool palette has been added to make them smaller and even easier to move.
A small highlight of iPadOS is the floating keyboard. This unobtrusive on-screen keyboard is similar to its iPhone counterpart and can be moved around the screen so it never gets in the way. In addition, the one-hand typing or now also the wipe writing makes you possible.
For easier word processing, Apple introduces new wipe gestures with iPadOS. By dragging three fingers over a marked text passage, you can easily copy it while spreading the fingers to insert the text in a new position. You don't have to shake the iPad or use the undo button on the on-screen keyboard to undo it, by the way. A three-finger stroke to the left is enough from now on.
Fonts are supposed to provide a new wow effect when working with pages and the like. These can now also be downloaded and installed on the iPad. Developers can also publish them on the App Store, making it easier for you to find new fonts.
The new operating system will be released on September 30. The list of compatible devices is particularly long this year. iPadOS 13 can be installed on the following devices:
