iPhone 11 vs iPhone 11 Pro vs iPhone 11 Pro Max: all the differences

ByAdan Flannigan 2019-09-12 14972

The day has come. One year after presenting its iPhone XS, XS Max and Xr, Apple has unveiled its new iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max, three high-end devices that are configured as three of the greatest exponents of the mobile sector. Both are very similar inside, but being three models it is evident that there are substantial differences between them.

Apple repeats the strategy of launching a "basic" model (between infinite quotation marks) and two more powerful models. It is therefore appropriate to put them face to face now that they are official to see how they are alike, how they differ and what makes each of the terminals special.

Which one has the biggest screen?

The first of the most obvious differences is size. The iPhone 11 Pro Max, as its name suggests, is the largest model and, therefore, with the largest screen. Next comes iPhone 11 and finally iPhone 11 Pro, which is the most compact (if 5.8 inches can be called compact, of course).

iPhone 11 has a 6.1-inch panel with HD+ resolution (1,792 x 828 pixels), leaving a density of 324 pixels per inch. The next highest model, the iPhone 11 Pro, drops to 5.8 inches but raises the resolution to FullHD+ (2,436 x 1,125 pixels) and 458 pixels per inch. The big brother, the iPhone 11 Pro Max, climbs to 6.5 inches with FullHD+ resolution (2,688 x 1,242 pixels) and 458 pixels per inch. Needless to say, the notch is still there.

They all share the same 19.5:9 format and have forgotten 3D Touch. You'll remember that this function allowed you to make actions in the icons of the apps, for example, according to the level of pressure with which we pressed the panel. Now it's Haptic Touch, a function inherited from the iPhone XR that is the same, only leaving it pressed for longer. Like on Android.

We also see repeated play of the screen technologies, since the iPhone 11 retains the IPS panel we saw in the XR and the two higher models opt for OLED screens. There are several differences between the two technologies, but the most obvious are the saturation of colors and the purest blacks in OLED screens.

Are there differences in RAM, processor, internal storage and battery?

If there is one thing that has characterized Apple over the last few years, it's that all of its new-batch iPhone share the processor. This year was no different, so all models presented today feature the Apple A13 chip, a high-end SoC manufactured in a 7 nanometer process.

Internal storage, as we said, also varies. iPhone 11 starts at 64 GB and can be achieved with 128 GB or 256 GB. The top models start at 64GB and jump directly to 256GB or 512GB, so there is no version with 128GB.

We can only talk about hours of use. iPhone 11 offers one hour more battery life than iPhone XR, iPhone 11 Pro has four hours more battery life than iPhone XS and iPhone 11 Pro Max five hours more than iPhone XS Max. All three have fast enough charge to set the phone to 50% using an 18W charger and wireless charge.

Do you have the same camera?

Something we saw in the 2018 iPhone was that the two most powerful models had two cameras and the iPhone XR only one. On the 2019 iPhone we see a similar pattern, with the difference that all models add a lens on the back. So, we have three cameras on iPhone 11 Pro and Pro Max and two on iPhone 11.

Let's talk about resolutions. If in recent times we have seen Android brands bet on 48 megapixels and up to 64 megapixels, Apple has preferred to be more conservative. All iPhone have 12-megapixel sensors, although the company in the block has added features that had not been present on their iPhone until now.

We already know about telephoto lenses and normal angle lenses, but the new iPhone opts for a second/third lens, depending on the model, which is a wide angle of 120 mm. Thus, iPhone 11 has a wide angle and a normal angular lens and the other two a wide angle, a telephoto and a normal angular lens. All share the 12-megapixel resolution and can record video at wide angle (and even switch between cameras).

As for the selfies camera, no news. All three iPhone have a 12 megapixel TrueDepth front camera that will enhance the portrait mode. Interesting to note that you can now record in slow motion with the front camera.

Is the connectivity the same?

No doubt about it. Apple spares no expense when it comes to connectivity, so all three iPhone have NFC to pay with Apple Pay, Bluetooth 5.0 to connect to AirPods or Apple Watch, 4G, WiFi ac (compatible with the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands) and Ligtning port. The only difference is in the LTE, which on iPhone 11 is Gigabit class with 2x2 MIMO and on the top models Gigabit class with 4x4 MIMO. Of course, the headphone jack is neither there nor expected.

How much will they cost and when can they be purchased?
