If you're looking for a compact smartphone that receives software updates as long as possible, you can't get past the iPhone SE. But since it's more than two years old, you can wait for its successor right away. If you're one of those who only buy a new smartphone every three, four, or five years, iPhone SE 2 is for you. Although Apple doesn't advertise it prominently, iPhone SE will almost certainly receive four major updates. This is important not only because of new features and improvements, but also because of increased security.
The iPhone SE has a metal frame and back - but a successor could change that. Although some observers expect rather few changes to the design, a new coat of paint is possible. A glass back, such as Apple's iPhone 8 and iPhone X, would be conceivable in order to make even the most compact offshoot fit for wireless charging. There is also a small chance for narrow display edges. So if you're not completely satisfied with the design of iPhone SE at the moment, wait for the second generation - perhaps with a new coat of paint.
The camera of the iPhone SE takes reasonable pictures, but cannot keep up with the current high-end devices. The 12-MP-Cam has a 5x digital zoom and modes such as continuous shooting, live photos, HDR or even face recognition. Videos are recorded in 1080p at 30 or 60 frames per second, but only a meager 1.2 MP camera is available for Selfies. The extent to which Apple will improve the cam in the iPhone SE 2 is currently unknown. But if you take a look at the current iPhones, the quality should improve noticeably.
When it comes to performance and battery life, you have every reason to look forward to iPhone SE 2. Apple might not be using its latest chipset, the A11 Bionic. But rumor has it that the A10 Fusion, which is used in iPhone 7, will be installed. Either way, it's likely to be by far the most powerful smartphone in this size for the release, also due to a lack of alternatives. A more energy-efficient processor will certainly also benefit the battery life.
A few months ago, the Californians launched their most expensive smartphone to date, the iPhone X, while the iPhone SE 2, on the other hand, is likely to become one of the cheapest devices. In terms of price, the model is likely to be significantly lower than the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus or iPhone X, but still offer good performance and possibly even wireless charging - but expensive features such as 3D face recognition will probably not be on board, which is good for pricing.
Apple is reportedly planning to release an inexpensive LCD model in the fall. But for fans of a compact look, this is unlikely to be an option. So keep your eyes open - the iPhone SE 2 could celebrate its launch in May or early June.
