The current front-runner in the iRobot range is "Roomba i7+": 1,200 euros, cleaning station, smart features and a really good app. But now the manufacturer is taking a different path and showing a fresh design with the "Roomba S9+". This helps to distinguish it from its predecessors and, above all, to keep it clean. iRobot calls the new design "PerfectEdge" technology and promises that the new suction robot will get better into corners and clean edges. With a 3D sensor at the front, the robot will be better able to detect obstacles and navigate through the rooms more intelligently. The two new rubber brushes on the underside, which are 30 percent wider than their predecessors, contribute to thorough cleaning. At first glance, not much has been done on the corner brush, except that it now sits even closer to the edge and thus better gets to the dirt. The S9+ sucks it into the collection container with a much more powerful motor. The manufacturer provides the vacuum cleaner with three cleaning modes.
The cleaning performance was the clear focus for iRobot when building the S9+. Obviously, no costs and efforts were spared, whereby: The costs are passed on to the customers to a large extent. The Roomba S9+ comes with the well-known "Clean Base", i.e. the charging station with built-in suction device. Here, however, the iRobot again relies on disposable dust bags. This is not only bad for the environment, it also costs money: Currently, three bags cost a whopping 20 euros! The manufacturer argues that allergy sufferers in particular benefit from the use of disposable bags and that the user does not come into contact with the dirt. A well sealed plastic container would be optional nevertheless a good alternative.
The S9+ app is identical to the i7+ app. It allows remote control of the robot, creation of a room plan for the planned room cleaning, setting of cleaning times and viewing of completed work. As with the Roomba i7+, the app is convincing right down the line. The operation is fun and the possibilities of the software are more than sufficient to control the cleaning crew at home.
The Roomba S9+ will be launched on 12 July 2019. The price for the complete package is a very high 1,499 Euro. The S9+ thus beats its predecessor i7+ by several hundred euros and finally leaves the toy corner. The purchase of such a vacuum cleaner should therefore be well considered. If you add the bags that you need every few months (or shorter, if you have pets), one or the other might think about the obligation of a domestic helper - registered and with the correct hourly wage of course.
