Microsoft has high ambitions for mobile gaming. The technology giant may have missed out on the smartphone market, but it remains a major player in the video game industry in general thanks to Windows and Xbox.
With the emergence of many popular platforms (PS4, Switch, PC, mobile, etc.) a new issue has emerged, that of cross-platform gaming. Behind this name is on the one hand the possibility of playing with your friends, regardless of their console, and on the other hand the possibility of switching from one platform to another and keeping your progress.
Microsoft intends to solve this problem through its Xbox Live service, which already brings PC and Xbox players together on some games. At the Game Developer Conference 2019, which will take place in March, Microsoft will present a new version of Xbox Live.
It will be possible for developers to create a unified experience between the Nintendo Switch, Xbox, PC and mobile devices on Android and iOS. Microsoft dreams with this announcement to be able to target 400 million consoles and gaming devices, for a total of 68 million players and 2 billion devices.
The arrival of mobile versions of popular games such as Fortnite, PUBG Mobile and Minecraft has rekindled the industry's hopes of being able to take advantage of the huge device base that smartphones are.
The extension of Xbox Live to these devices, and the very popular Nintendo Switch, seems clearly designed to build on this phenomenon. It could also be a springboard for Microsoft, which plans to launch the first tests of xCloud in 2019, its service that will allow you to play ambitious Xbox games on your smartphone. The firm had also signed a partnership agreement with Samsung.
