Apple is working on a new version of MacOS. MacOS 10.15 is christened Catalina and offers some rebuilds, some of which also affect other devices. As one of the new features Apple integrates Sidecar. This means that an iPad can be used as a second display. This was already possible before, but only with the help of third party developers who sold corresponding solutions. This also enables pen operation at the same time, because users can draw on the iPad with the Apple Pencil. MacOS programs must support this, however.
MacOS will also be greatly expanded in the area of accessibility. From now on Macs will be controllable with voice commands. The interpretation is done by the language assistant Siri. This is primarily aimed at users who cannot operate their computer with their hands, or only to a limited extent.
An interesting innovation also affects all Macs with a T2 chip. In the future, these can be found again even in idle mode via the function for lost devices (Find my Mac, Find my iPhone). However, the Macs do not connect to a WWAN or WLAN, but instead use small Bluetooth emissions. This should save a lot of power, especially if Bluetooth LE alias Bluetooth Smart is used. But technically more in-depth details are still pending. So far, it is known that these Bluetooth packets are picked up by surrounding iOS devices and can be localized as needed. Apple promises that privacy will be fully respected here, so it can't be used as a tracking system to locate other notebooks. Encryption is supposed to guarantee this. The function does not make the theft more difficult, but it does increase the risk for the thief, which indirectly improves the situation.
A new safety function to protect Catalina from damage is exciting. The operating system itself is stored on a storage volume that is apparently set to read-only mode. Apple describes that nothing can manipulate this memory, but it can be assumed that operating system updates can change this status. Apple also wants to get rid of the strong integration of extensions (kext). These should now run separately from the operating system. This could be a challenge for hardware developers, who will have to ensure the compatibility of their hardware with Catalina over the next few months. This is not a lot of time and experience has shown that problems can be expected. This is also due to the fact that Apple traditionally still changes internals in the now starting developer beta, so that some developers only have a few weeks for the adaptation.
Further innovations are known from iOS. For example, screen time analysis will also be possible on Catalina systems.
Apple also supports Dolby Atmos with Catalina. But only with Macs that were introduced in 2018 or 2019. According to Apple, the operating system itself will be installable on all Macs released since mid-2012. The operating system will be completed in autumn 2019.
As every year, Apple has presented an extensive list of new features that goes into even more detail.
