Nubia as a manufacturer is always good for a surprise: with the Nubia X you show an alternative notch-less design, the Nubia Alpha becomes the most extraordinary Smartwatch of the year - and can already be found on the Nubia Global Site - and now the first smartphone with active fan.
However, why one is eager to establish the gaming smartphone series Red Magic in Europe remains a little unclear. The target group is not very big, but Vivo still sees potential and brings the Vivo IQOO. But in the end the efforts are more or less in vain, because a Nubia Red Magic Mars could only be ordered via the redmagic.gg website - you haven't heard much about the Red Magic.
The Nubia Red Magic 3 arrived in China on May 3rd and Europe will follow in the same month. It starts at 2899 Yuan about 386€, which is extremely cheap for a Snapdragon 855 Phone (to the product page at Nubia).
The design doesn't change much and the Red Magic 3 will look quite similar to its predecessor, Nubia Red Magic Mars. But it will get bigger - or: the Red Magic 3 will bring the user even deeper into the game. Instead of a 6 inch display, this now measures a stately 6.65 inch. Accordingly, the dimensions also increase to 171.7 x 78.5 x 9.65 mm at 215g. With the predecessor it was 158.2 x 75 x 9.9mm at 193g. It is available in four colors, whereby at the beginning only two are listed. The standard colour, black with black / anthracite back, is available with 6 or 8GB. The red back is only available in combination with 8+128GB memory. Special are the two Special Editions. Camouflage already existed with the predecessor and that makes a lot. New, and due to the current trend, is Twilight with a color gradient from purple to red. Both color variants are only available in combination with 12+256GB memory and they will cost accordingly more.
With the integrated fan, the Nubia Red Magic 3 is the first among gaming smartphones. For the Asus ROG Gaming Smartphone and Xiaomi Blackshark 2, there are only attachments in the form of a gamepad that attach a fan externally. Nubia expects a 500% better cooling performance than with a normal heatpipe.
Apart from that, the Nubia Red Magic remains somewhat unobtrusive optically. Typical for Nubia and "Red"-Magic are a few accents in red, as well as an RGB light strip on the back. This can be used for atmospheric lighting during gaming, but also as a notification LED. Under the hood there are 4 vibration motors in all four corners for "4D" feedback. There is much more to the frame than usual:
▪ Left: Slider at the top for Game Mode, SIM slot, 7 pins in the middle for the docking station
▪ Right: two sensitive shoulder buttons as buttons when gambling (can also be configured with the fingerprint sensor), fan grille, volume rocker and power button
▪ Downstairs: USB-C port, hole for speaker and microphone
▪ Top: 3,5mm jack socket
The absence of a notch and a borderless display makes sense with the gaming smartphone: the space above and below the display is used for loudspeakers facing the player. The Redmagic 3 is also easier to hold, with two recessed grips on the back.
The new display has it all: it measures a proud 6.65 inches in the diagonal, has a 19.5:9 format, is equipped with an AMOLED panel and the picture is particularly fluid thanks to the 90 Hz repetition rate. Maybe this is also a similar panel to the new OnePlus 7 Pro. It will resolve with 2340 x 1080 pixels, which is enough for 387 PPI, but also does not unnecessarily burden the hardware. You can argue about the size, but those who already use a gaming smartphone are looking for entertainment and are happy about the larger and smoother display.
As far as connectivity is concerned, you don't have to worry about the China version either, because LTE B20 is also included here: 1/2/3/4/5/7/8/12/17/18/19/20/26. You can also buy a docking station that supplies the phone with power via USB-C and an Ethernet port - everything for the ping!
The 5000mAh battery is relatively large. This should also bring the Red Magic 3 safely through the day, including excessive gaming. The smartphone is charged via USB-C with Qualcomm's Quick Charge 4+ or via Power Delivery - both with up to 27 watts.
Red Magic 3 vs. Blackshark 2 - who will win the race this time? Black Shark says you get much smoother movement on the display, but leaves it at the 60Hz panel. This time the point "screen" definitely goes to Nubia: bigger and with 90Hz. The rest are relatively even and offer everything the mobile gamer desires. However, the active fan in the Nubia Red Magic 3 provides a lot of ignition - let's see how it performs in practice.
In the next few days we should also be able to find out the prices and availability of the Global Version - on May 3rd the starting signal was given in China.
