Osmo Pocket review: DJI’s stabilised 4K camera can fit into your pocket

ByGB Blog Official 2018-12-06 2360

DJI have been consistently expanding their range of camera stabilisers and accessories – and with the DJI Osmo Pocket camera, the company has basically created an alternative to GoPro — a really small action camera sitting atop a pocket-sized version of the bestselling Osmo stabilize.

DJI Osmo Pocket camera: the smallest stabilised camera ever?

● Camera + stabilizer

● 4.8 x 1.5 x 1.1 inches; 116 grams

● Touch screen viewfinder

● Modular connector

● Type-C port

One of the things that sets DJI drones far apart from the competition are the company's dedicated gimbals that ensure a stable footage mid-flight. With models like the DJI Mavic Air, the gimbals have also been getting smaller and smaller – this same technology has made the new Osmo Pocket possible.

The gadget consists of the mini gimbal with a camera fitted atop attached to the main body of the Osmo Pocket. The whole contraption is very compact measuring just 4.8 x 1.5 x 1.1 inches and definitely very portable – so portable, in fact, that you can easily fit it into your back jeans pocket.

The front panel of the device is home to all of the main controls. On the front, you will also find a plastic tab that covers the connector points to which you can hook up the various modular accessories or connect your smartphone to use its screen to view your footage. With that, the device does come with its own mini LCD display.

Here's where we have notices the first disadvantage of the design as well: the cover tab used to cover the connectors is very small as well as the clip-on accessories themselves — and we feel that they can get lost easily.

With that, the promised accessories do promise loads of extra functionality: there is the waterproof case, mounts for attaching the gadget to helmets and backpacks, ND filters, etc.

At the bottom, there is the power-on button, as well as the button for recording and switching between different features.

The gadget's body is made from textured plastic that makes it easy to hold. You will also find the Type-C port and the Micro SD card slot on the device.

DJI Osmo Pocket: 3-axis stabilization

● 3-axis gimbal

● 3 ways to stabilize your image

Naturally, image and video stabilization are what the Osmo Pocket is all about. It uses the smallest 3-axis mechanical gimbal and incorporates mechanical, electronic and optical image stabilization.

DJI Osmo Pocket: powerful camera

● 4K video up to 60fps

● 1/2.3-inch sensor

● 12MP stills

Typically, we would not expect much from a camera this small — but there are a few pleasant surprises with the Osmo Pocket. It can capture 4K video at up to 60 frames per second. You will be able to shoot in widescreen and square modes (hello, Instagram) and there is even the option to auto-rotate the footage. The downside here is that the battery life will not let you shoot long enough at 60 frames per second in 4K – but you will get 140 minutes shooting at 30 frames.

Image-wise, there is the 12-megapixel still camera coming with its own set of features and modes to give more versatility to the pictures.

DJI Osmo Pocket: shooting modes

● Auto face-tracking

● ActiveTrack object tracking

● FPV mode

● 3x3 Panorama

● Motionlapse

● NightShot

There are a few key features that make the Osmo Pocket a signature DJI product. Namely, auto face tracing, object tracking and FPV mode. Then, there is also the 3x3 Panorama, Motionlapse and NightShot.

Face tracking

Osmo Pocket's camera will automatically "stick" to your face and will adjust as the camera moves to keep it within the frame — without any direct input from the user. With the automatic gimbal, you will be getting a smooth video and, thanks to face tracking, the subject of the video will never lose focus.

Present in most DJI gadgets, AcriveTrack lets you choose the subject/object on screen, which will then be kept in the frame automatically throughout your footage.

In this mode, the camera will follow your movements throughout the video adding fluidity to the whole process without too much effort on your part.

3x3 Panoramas

3x3 Panorama is the best mode for shooting scenery as it will capture of the background in detail. Motionlapse "turns hours into seconds" and lets you get creative with your video making.

True to its name, illuminate low-lit scenes and lets you take better shots in bad lighting conditions.

In addition to the variety of shooting modes, the Osmo Pocket comes with a dedicated app — DJI Mimo. The app is similar to GoPro's QuikStory and gives you more options when editing footage: cutting, adding effects, etc.

DJI Osmo Pocket: summing things up

The DJI Osmo Pocket definitely has a lot of things going for it. It's an incredibly compact and very well stabilized 4K camera with a wide range of accessories and shooting modes. The cam is very simple in use and, actually, quite fun to work with.

On the downside, there are the very small clip-on accessories that, we are afraid, can easily disappear. The camera itself is not waterproof (which is something we would expect of an action camera) – you will need to purchase additional waterproof housing for that. The screen on the gimbal is quite small as well — but this is understandable with the gadget's miniature size – and you can always connect your smartphone and use its display instead.

All things considered, we would definitely recommend the Osmo Pocket for what it is — a one od a kind portable camera with impressive versatility. It is an interesting alternative to GoPro and a powerful cinematic gadget to have in your action shooting tool kit. Price-wise, it is expected to come at around $350.
